BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Coastal Carolina fended off Campbell's second half rally, edging the Camels 14-13 Wednesday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Chanticleers (2-0) erased a one goal halftime deficit and built a 14-9 lead with 15:07 to play before four straight Campbell (0-2) scores sliced the advantage to a single goal with 1:51 remaining. CU picked up the ensuing draw control, but a turnover forced by Abbey Buchanan returned the ball to Coastal for good.
Campbell kept Coastal Carolina off the board for the game's final 15 minutes, while
Julianna Sanchez netted three of her team-high five goals during CU's four goal run.
The Camels owned a 7-6 halftime lead after
Laura Will's free position score with 26 seconds remaining, but Coastal notched eight of the second half's first 10 goals to take a 14-9 lead, including four goals and an assist from Samantha Courtemanche.
Courtemanche led the Chanticleers with six goals and two assists, while Lyla Robinson (one goal, three assists) and Megan Busch (two goals, two assists) added four points apiece for CCU. Lauren Cremen also scored three goals off the bench, while Regan McComb collected 13 saves.
Sanchez added eight draw controls to go along with her five goals, while Will tallied two goals and two assists.
Sam Carey also registered seven draw controls with a goal, an assist, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Alex Salim also stopped a career-high 15 shots for the Camels.
Mackenzie Kolesar scored two goals, while
Megan Matthews and
Alexis McDaniel posted a goal and an assist.
Shania Roehrich also picked up a goal.
