DURHAM, N.C. - An offensive eruption from both sides in the fifth inning was the deciding factor as (RV) Duke took a 13-7 shootout win over Campbell on Wednesday night at Duke Softball Stadium.
Campbell moves to 5-6 on the season while Duke, who is receiving votes in the USA Softball poll, advances to 9-1.
Duke got on the board in the first inning as Caroline Jacobsen as her hit to left field took an odd bounce on the ground past a charging Claudia Ware to take a 1-0 lead.
The Camels responded later in the third as Diana Parker led off the inning, taking her first pitch for a double to right center. Destini England followed it up by reaching on a fielder's choice immediately stealing second bringing up Ware to bat.Â
Ware reached on a fielder's choice herself as the Blue Devils threw out Parker at the plate, but an errant throw by Duke catcher Raine Wilson to third allowed England to score the tying run.
The Blue Devils added two runs in the bottom on a RBI triple from leadoff hitter Jameson Kavel. Kavel later scored from third on a passed ball, breaking the tie for a 3-2 lead.
The fifth inning saw a combined 15 runs on 13 hits and one error from both the Camels and Blue Devils.
Campbell batted through the order as Ware led off the inning with a walk followed by a single through the left side from Kynadi Tipler. Kayla Fredendall connected for her third home run of the season in the next at bat as Campbell took its first lead of the evening.
Cassie Wancheck singled up the middle while Diana Parker and pinch-hitter Kiana Jones were awarded walks to load the bases for England where the grad transfer booted one through the middle of the field scoring two more runs as CU took a 6-3 advantage.
Duke answered back in the bottom half of the inning, tying a program-record with 10 runs in the fifth inning to recapture the lead away from the Camels.
Fredendall connected for her second homer of the evening with a solo shot in the sixth, but the Blue Devils scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the 15-7 run-rule win.
Kristina Foreman went 3-for-5 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in two more as four others Blue Devils put up multi-RBI performances.Â
Fredendall went 2-for-4 for Campbell scoring three runs and scoring two more in her first game with multiple home runs. Tipler also went 2-for-4 while England picked up a hit in her sixth straight game, adding in two RBI in the process.
Kayla Howald received the loss for the Camels pitching 4.1 innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out six. Duke reliever Brianna Butler earned her second win of the season, pitching the last 1.1 innings of the game where she gave up one earned run on two hits.Â

Campbell heads to the Green and White Classic tournament hosted by Charlotte, Feb. 21-23. The Camels will play two games against hosts Charlotte and Delaware State across the three-day tournament.Â
