BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Megan Palozzi's goal with 3:00 remaining lifted visiting East Carolina past Campbell 12-11 Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Pirates move to 3-1 on the season, while Campbell falls to 0-5.
Campbell led 11-10 with 7:35 to go in the game after
Megan Matthews knocked in her second score of the day, but Palozzi posted two unanswered free position scores for ECU, the first to tie it at the 6:14 mark and another with 3:00 remaining in regulation to go up 12-11.
The Camels picked up possession twice in the final three minutes of regulation after Palozzi's go-ahead goal, getting a free position shot attempt with 2:24 remaining, followed by a turnover with under a minute to go before ECU ran out the clock.
The game featured six ties and five lead changes, with the score knotting up four times in the second half alone.
The Pirates owned the advantage in shots (33-27) and draw controls (13-12), outshooting the Camels 22-9 in the second stanza and winning 10-of-14 draws in the frame. ECU also converted all three of its second half free position tries in the final half.
Campbell led 6-4 at the half after goals from Matthews and
Julianna Sanchez separated by 12 seconds in the final minute, and
Mackenzie Kolesar's third goal of the game to open the second frame gave CU its largest lead at 7-4 before five consecutive ECU scores.
Palozzi netted a game-high four goals for the Pirates, while Megan Tryniski notched three goals and an assist. Ellie Bromley added two goals with four ground balls, while Caroline Kimel registered a goal, an assist, two ground balls and four draw controls.
Ally Stanton also posted a goal with four ground balls, while Ashley Vernon saved nine shots.
Kolesar paced Campbell with three goals and an assist, while Matthews recorded four points on two goals and two assists, also causing two turnovers.
Sam Carey matched with a pair of goals and assists as well, collecting six draw controls.
Sanchez scored twice, while
Anna Ryan gathered five ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Alex Salim posted her fifth double-figure saves outing in as many games with 14 stops.
Next up, the Camels will head on the road for two straight, taking on George Washington on March 1 and Mount St. Mary's on March 4. Campbell returns home on March 7, entertaining Bucknell.
