Lacrosse picks up first win at GW 11-9

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Campbell wrapped a 7-0 run around the half and held off George Washington 11-9 on Sunday for its first win of the season.

Campbell moves to 1-5 on the year, while the Colonials dip to 0-5.

After George Washington went up 3-1, Campbell reeled off seven straight scores, including six in a row to close the first half, taking a 7-3 lead into the break, its largest halftime lead of the season.

Sam Carey's free position score, her second of the day, with 28:34 on the clock in the second made it 8-3 Camels, before GW's Katie Quinn answered with the Colonials first goal in 22:08 of game clock.

The Colonials trimmed the Campbell lead to a single score twice in the final 11:16, but Laura Will matched both GW goals, including her second with 4:43 to play, to preserve the lead for the Camels.

Will was one of six Camels with multiple points in the win, including four goals from Julianna Sanchez. Mackenzie Kolesar also scored twice, adding an assist, while Carey collected two goals and Megan Matthews registered two assists. Alexis McDaniel notched a goal and an assist apiece, while Ally Heath also connected on an assist.

Carey tacked on three ground balls and five draw controls, helping Campbell own a 12-10 edge on the draw, including a 9-2 advantage in the first half. Kennedy Boyle recorded three ground balls, three draw controls and a caused turnover, while Alex Salim secured 13 saves with two ground balls for the Camels.

Kendall Lambert (three goals, one assist) and Morgan McDonnell (two goals, two assists) led GW with four points each. Kianah Watson, meanwhile, tallied five ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Caroline Esmond caused four CU miscues, adding three ground balls. Megan Patrick also made 14 saves for the Colonials.
