Camels sweep day two at Holy City Showdown

Campbell shutouts Coppin State, Maine

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Campbell earned two shutout victories over Coppin State, 11-0, and Maine, 4-0, on the second day at the Holy City Showdown.

Campbell moves to above .500 for the first time this season with a 10-9 record overall. Coppin State drops 0-3 while Maine falls to 1-6.

Claudia Ware hit a grand slam over the left field wall in the fifth inning, bring the run-run into effect as Campbell earned an 11-0 win over Coppin State in five innings.

Campbell scored in the first inning as Noemi Cortez hit a RBI single to left field. Kayla Fredendall hit her fifth home run of the season in the next at bat for a 3-0 lead.

Ware hit a triple to left field to start the third inning, crossing the plate on a RBI double from Kynadi Tipler. Cortez followed with an RBI double to score Tipler while Mackenzie Parker drove in two additional runs on her double to left field, giving Campbell a 7-0 lead.

Coppin State pitcher Lily Carter walked three batters, loading the bases. Ware hit her first career home run, scoring four runs on the grand slam and bringing the margin to 11-0 for the run-rule victory.

Ware went 3-for-4, scored three runs and tied her career-best with four RBI. 

Cortez, Fredendall and Mackenzie Parker all added at least one hit and two RBI apiece while Tipler added another RBI.

The combined pitching effort of starter Georgeanna Barefoot and reliever Diana Parker saw the Eagles earn only three hits and one walk across five innings.

Diana Parker (1-1) earned her first of the season after combining with Georgeanna Barefoot to allow only three hits and one walk in five innings. Jaylene Sierra (0-1) took the loss for the Eagles, giving up six earned runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings.

Campbell (10-9) earned a 4-0 win over Maine in its second game on day two at the Holy City Showdown.

Kayla Fredendall led the Camels, going 2-for-4 at the plate and scoring the first run of the game in the fourth on her solo home run down the right field line.

Campbell added two more runs in the fifth inning. Katelyn Chisholm reached on a single hit straight back to the pitcher while Morgan Rios and Destini England loaded the bases after both reaching on Maine errors. Kynadi Tipler followed, driving in two runs on her double to right field.

Noemi Cortez added a late insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple to center field, giving Campbell a 4-0 lead.

Maine threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Keely Clark singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Georgeanna Barefoot shut down the next batters for the Black Bears, striking out one and forcing a groundout to end the game.

Tipler joined Fredendall going 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. 

Rios caught two runners for Maine attempting to steal bases while also going 1-for-2 at the plate and scoring one run.

Barefoot (5-3) picked up her fifth win of the season, allowing five hits and striking out nine in a complete game effort. Maine's Lilly Volk (0-2) took the loss after allowing two earned runs in seven innings of work.
