ELON, N.C. – Mae McGlynn's two goals and an assist helped Elon defeat Campbell 12-5 in the 2020 season opener for both teams Saturday at Rudd Field.
The Phoenix (1-0) took a 5-3 lead into halftime and posted five straight goals to open the second frame, including both of McGlynn's scores, to hold off the visiting Camels (0-1).
McGlynn also assisted on Cate Mackel's first half goal that made it 5-2 Elon with 12:34 on the clock. Mackel and McGlynn were two of four Phoenix to net two goals on the day, joined by Sara Bouwman and Cassidy Creighton.
Mackel added three ground balls and a caused turnover for Elon. Gillian Curran also collected 10 draw controls and Quinn Daly caused three turnovers. Allie Cerrone added nine saves.
Julianna Sanchez and
Megan Matthews both tallied two points for the Camels, with Sanchez logging a goal and an assist, while Matthews dished out two assists. Five different Camels scored goals, with
Sam Carey,
Mackenzie Kolesar,
Laura Will and
Ally Heath joining Sanchez.
Carey tacked on three ground balls and a caused turnover, while
Anna Ryan and
Rebekah Taylor both notched three caused turnovers and three ground balls each, with
Alex Salim recording 12 saves.
Elon held a 14-6 advantage in draw controls, posting a 14 shot attempt differential (34-20), while converting 5-of-9 free position tries.
Next up, the Camels will make their home debut on Wednesday, February 12 at 3:00 p.m., hosting former conference rival Coastal Carolina at Barker-Lane Stadium.
