Camels head to Longwood Monday

CU wraps 3 games in 5-day span

FARMVILLE, VA. – Coming off the team's best offensive performance in Big South play this season, Campbell travels to Longwood Monday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Willett Hall.

The Camels (12-12, 3-9) ended a five-game losing streak Saturday with a 79-62 victory over Presbyterian at Gore Arena.  CU shot 56.6 percent from the floor committed just seven turnovers and led for nearly 36 minutes.  Cedric Henderson, Jr., led Campbell with career highs of 25 points (11-14 FG) and 10 rebounds, while Cory Gensler added a season-high 20 points and became the 28th player in Campbell history to reach 1,000 career points.  Jordan Whitfield added 10 points and Joshua Lusane dealt six assists in his first career start.

Longwood (9-16, 4-8) rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to take a two-point lead with 2:02 remaining Saturday over Big South leader Winthrop, but the Lancers were scoreless in their final five possessions and dropped a 70-68 decision.  Juan Munoz led Longwood with 24 points, while JaShaun Smith added 15 for the Lancers, who made just 14-of-23 (.609) from the line.

Last month in Buies Creek, Cory Gensler led four double figure scorers with 15 points and Campbell defeated Longwood 68-58.  Ja'Cor Nelson and Cedric Henderson, Jr., added 11 points apiece and Austin McCullough came off the bench to score 10 for the Camels, who shot 62.5 percent (15-24) in the second half.  Shabooty Phillips led Longwood with 13 points and Juan Munoz added 11 for the Lancers.

Campbell made 7-of-10 threes in the second period, 8-of-23 for the afternoon, and shot 50 percent overall.  The Camels limited the Lancers to just 39 percent shooting (20-51) and improved to 8-0 this year when holding their opponent to fewer than 60 points.

  • Monday's game marks the second time Campbell has played 3 games in a 5-day span in Big South play this year.  Longwood has been home for games Thursday (71-63 win over Charleston Southern) and Saturday (70-68 loss to Winthrop).  Campbell fell 62-53 Thursday at Winthrop before defeating Presbyterian Saturday at home.
  • Three Camels - Henderson (13.0), Gensler (10.9) and Whitfield (10.2) - are scoring in double figures against Big South competition.  Overall, Henderson leads CU with a 12.7 scoring average.
  • Gensler enters Monday's game 1,016 points - 28th overall in CU history and 16th in the program's Division I era (since '77-78).

  • The Camels have led at halftime in each of their last seven games.
  • After dropping six of their first seven Big South games, the Lancers have won three of their last five in league play.
  • Campbell has won the last four games (and five of the last six) in the series with Longwood, which joined the Big South in 2012-13.
  • CU is 4-6 all-time at Willett Hall, but won last year's meeting at Farmville, 74-72, behind Chris Clemons' 41-point effort.
  • Campbell (67.5) and Longwood (70.1) rank second and fourth, respectively, among Big South teams in scoring defense.
  • Senior guard Shabooty Phillips comes off the bench to lead a balanced Longwood offense with an 11.0 scoring average.  Sophomore guard Juan Munoz (10.2) and senior forward JaShaun Smith (10.0) also score in double figures.
