Camels split games to round out opening weekend

Jones hits go-ahead home run, Barefoot fans 12 in 4-3 comeback win over Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. - Campbell ended the weekend on a high note, splitting its games on the final day of the Kickin' Chicken Classic, falling to East Carolina 4-1 and topping Coastal Carolina 4-3.

Campbell moves to 1-4 on the season after today's split. East Carolina improves to 2-3 while Coastal Carolina drops to 1-4.

Game One - East Carolina 4, Campbell 1
Logyn Estes went two-for-three at the plate and tossed five and a third scoreless innings as East Carolina topped Campbell, 4-1.

The Pirates added a run in the next inning when Olivia Narron crossed the plate on a fielding error in the outfield on the Camels. 

East Carolina added two more runs later on in the sixth on another fielding error and a hit.

Campbell broke the shutout in the seventh after Cassie Wancheck hit a leadoff homer to start the inning but ECU recorded three straight outs to end the game.

Kayla Howald (0-2) pitched six complete innings for the Camels, giving up one earned run and striking out seven batters, while ECU's Whitney Sanford was credited with the save after allowing one run on two hits.

Game Two - Campbell 4, Coastal Carolina 3

A dominant pitching performance from freshman Georgeanna Barefoot and home runs in the sixth and seventh innings propelled Campbell to a 4-3 comeback victory over Coastal Carolina.

Coastal Carolina added two runs in the fourth when Kassidy Smith's RBI-triple. Smith crossed the plate in the following at bat on a single from Mikaya Thomas. The Chanticleers took a 3-0 lead in the next inning after three straight errors from the Campbell defense brought in a run.

Campbell's comeback started in the sixth when Claudia Ware singled through the right side. Kynadi Tipler homered in the next at bat, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Wancheck started the seventh inning by drawing a lead off walk while freshman Kiana Jones entered the game as a pinch hitter. Jones took advantage in her first career at bat by crushing a home run off the scoreboard in right field as Campbell its first lead of the day.

The Chanticleers started the bottom half of the seventh with a hit, but left the tying run stranded as Barefoot retired the final three batters to end the game.

Barefoot (1-2) picked up her first career win after allowing two earned runs on seven hits. The freshman closed out the game by picking up four of her 12 total strikeouts in the final two innings.

Coastal Carolina's Kaitlin Beasley-Polko (0-3) took the loss after giving up the go ahead run in the seventh.

Game Two - Virginia Tech 11, Campbell 3 (6 inn.)

The Camels grabbed some early momentum against the Hokies in the first inning, starting with Destini England and Kayla Fredendall drawing walks. 

Designated player and senior Kynadi Tipler drove home former high school teammate England on her single through the left side, advancing to second on the throw to the plate. 

Cassie Wancheck doubled down the left field line to drive in two more runs as Campbell earned a 3-0 lead.

Virginia Tech responded later in the inning, scoring three runs of its own to tie the game. Al Velazquez started the scoring in the inning as she drove home a run with a double.

The Hokies added another run as Campbell settled for an out at first on a hard hit ball tipped off the glove of starting pitcher Megan Richards. Kelsey Bennett scored the tying run on her single to right field. 

The game remained close until the third when Virginia Tech took its first lead of the game on another RBI-single from Bennett. The Hokies added two more runs in the fourth, taking a 6-3 lead.

The run-rule came into effect in the sixth as the Hokies scored five runs on three hits to take the 11-3 victory.

Wancheck reached base safely on all three of her at bats, going 2-for-2 with a walk.

Kayla Howald (0-1) picked up the loss in the decision after giving up two earned runs in three and a third innings of work. Virginia Tech's Kaylee Hewitt (2-0) earned the win, fanning eight batters in six innings.

Campbell returns to the Kickin' Chicken Classic tomorrow with games against East Carolina at 11:45 a.m. and tournament hosts Coastal Carolina at 2:00 p.m.
