Campbell closes out play at LSU Round Robin

Campbell drops two games to Illinois State and No. 5/4 LSU

BATON ROUGE, LA. - Campbell dropped both its games to open the 2020 edition of the LSU Round Robin tournament, falling to both Illinois State, 4-1, and nationally-ranked No. 5/4 LSU, 21-0.

The Camels move to 10-12 on the season after today's games with Illinois State improves to 10-9 and No. 5/4 LSU to 17-3.

Illinois State 4, Camels 0
Illinois State scored four of its five total runs in the third inning en route to a 5-1 win over Campbell.

Kayla Fredendall, who went 2-for-3 at the plate, doubled to left field in the fourth but was left stranded as two straight fly-outs closed out the top half of the inning.

Campbell put a runner in scoring position the following inning as Destini England and Claudia Ware recorded back to back hits. Illinois State managed to escape the Camels threat forcing a groundout to end the inning.

The Camels scored their only run of the day as Fredendall hammered a ball over the Tiger Park scoreboard in right field for a solo home run, one of the longest hit balls of the slugger's career.

The Red Birds scored an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth with a RBI single up the middle of the field to make it a 5-1 advantage, ultimately resulting in the final score of the game.

Fredendall went 2-for-3, scoring one run and a RBI with her homer. Ware recorded a multi-hit game, her seventh this season, going 2-for-3 today.

Mack Leonard, who started in the circle for the Red Birds, went 2-for-2 with a run and walk. Brittni LaFountaine, added two RBI and a run on one hit while three others recorded RBI base hits.

Megan Richards took the loss, throwing all six innings and striking out a season-high five batters. Hannah Ross picked up the win after pitching the last five innings in relief.

No. 5/4 LSU 5, Camels 1
Campbell dropped its final game at the LSU Round Robin, falling 5-1 to No. 5/4 ranked LSU.

The Tigers opened up the game scoring one run in the first on a sacrifice fly to right field hit by All-American Shelbi Sunseri. LSU added two more runs in the second, scoring on an Aliyah Andrews RBI single to left center. Andrews would steal second and score on a Campbell fielding error in the next at-bat.

LSU made it 4-0 in the third on Amanda Doyle's RBI double to left center before Campbell prevented two additional runs from scoring, tagging two runners attempting to score from third.

Campbell got one back the next inning as Kayla Fredendall drove in Claudia Ware from second on her RBI double to left field, making it 4-1.

Nationally-ranked LSU would score one more run as Ciara Briggs torched a ball for a triple down the right field line to make it 5-1.

Fredendall went 1-for-3 at the plate with one RBI for the Camels. Danielle Northrup, who made her first start of the season in right field, collected another hit in the seventh inning while Ware reached on base twice after drawing two walks.

Andrews stole two bases, scored two runs and drove in another after going 2-for-4 for the Tigers. Three others also drove in one run each for LSU in today's game.

Georgeanna Barefoot (5-6) went the distance in the circle, throwing 6.0 innings with four earned runs off of seven hits and two strikeouts. Ali Kiponen (5-1), who ranks third in the nation with a 0.29 ERA entering into the game, also threw a complete game for the Tigers. Kiponen gave up only her second run of the season to the Camels, but racked up a career-best 15 strikeouts today.
