CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Former Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Year Kiera Gaines has been named to the Big South Conference Hercules Tires Women's Basketball All-Decade team.
Gaines played for the Camels under Big South Hall of Famer
Wanda Watkins from 2012 to 2015 and was tabbed the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2014.
A 15-person committee of Big South Conference administrators served as the official voting panel to determine the All-Decade Team, with fan voting comprising 20 percent of the overall total. The 2010-19 Women's Basketball All-Decade Team is listed below in alphabetical order and features 12 players and one head coach. In case of ties, additional honorees have been added.
Kiera closed out her career in the orange and black as the program's 14 highest-scorer tallying 1,199 career points. She capped off her career by leading the Camels in scoring her senior season with 11.9 points per game and also hauled in the squads most rebounds in 2013, 2015, and 2015.
The three-time Second Team All-Big South selection and 2012 All-Freshman team member averaged 12 points per game and 9.3 boards a game during her junior campaign where she was the league's top defender after swiping 1.9 steals per game.
Gaines also tallied other honors including being named First Team All-State in 2015 and to the Second Team in 2013.
Women's Basketball All-Decade Team candidates were determined based on being at least one of the following: 1) Was a multiple All-Conference honoree; 2) Was named an All-American; 3) Is a member of the Big South Conference Hall of Fame; 4) Student-athletes must be a college graduate or in good academic standing with their respective institution; 5) Won a Conference Championship as a coach and/or was voted Conference Coach of the Year. Candidates that participated in two different decades were placed in a specific decade based on consultation from member institutions. Member institutions also had final determination in regards to inclusion of student-athletes and coaches. Previous Women's Basketball All-Decade Teams were recognized for the years 1986-89, 1990-99 and 2000-09.
