WASHINGTON, D.C. – Campbell fought back to tie the game after trailing by nine in the second half, but ultimately fell short against Hofstra, 55-50, Friday evening in the Credit Union 1 CAA Women's Basketball Championship quarterfinal at CareFirst Arena.
The Camels (20-12) went on a 7-0 run over 90 seconds to tie the Pride (10-21) at 44 after a steal by
Olivia Tucker eventually led to a layup by
Ciara Alexander.
After over a minute of scoreless play from both teams, Hofstra responded with a 7-0 run of its own to hold the Camels at bay for the rest of the game, spurned on by a three pointer from Ema Karim.
Jasmine Nivar made a three pointer to cut the deficit to three with eight seconds remaining, but Alarice Gooden made both of her ensuing free throws for the final score.
Tucker led Campbell's scoring efforts with 10, and
Jasmine Felton added eight points and seven rebounds in addition to a game-high four assists. Gooden led all scorers with 14.
Both defenses played hard in the first quarter, resulting in a 10-8 Campbell lead after 10 minutes. Five different Camels scored buckets, while Sandra Magolico led the Pride with six points.
Gianni Boone tied her career high with four steals, and
N'na Konate had another game with two blocks. She now has 51 on the year and sits in fourth place in school history for blocks in a season.
Emerson Thompson knocked down a three pointer just 12 seconds into the second frame to put the Camels up by five, but the Pride answered with a 6-0 run over the next 1:09.
Campbell's shooting struggles continued the rest of the quarter, going the last 7:07 without making a field goal. The defense continued to keep the Pride from creating a big lead, but Chloe Sterling knocked down her three-point attempt at the buzzer to give Hofstra the 25-20 lead at halftime.
The start of the third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams exchanging scores. A three pointer from Emma Von Essen with 4:10 left in the frame extended the lead to nine, the largest of the night.
The Pride, who is shooting 29% from beyond the arc this season, hit at a clip of 44% in the game. Hofstra also took 10 more free throws than the Camels and converted seven more.
