BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Lithuanian international forward Laurynas Vaištaras has signed a national letter of intent with Campbell University, head men's basketball coach
Kevin McGeehan announced Wednesday.
A 6-foot-6 forward, Vaištaras joins Dray Burton, PJ Carter and Gediminas Mokšeckas in the 2020 Fighting Camel recruiting class.
Vaištaras has represented his country at each age level and won silver with Lithuania at the 2016 FIBA U-16 European Championship. At the 2019 European U-18 Championship, he averaged 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds. He graduated from Kaunas Varpas Gymnasium in 2019 after contributing 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists per game. The native of Plunges, Lithuania played for Žalgiris II this past season.
"Laurynas completes what will be a very successful class for Campbell Basketball," said McGeehan, the 2019 Big South Coach of the Year who is entering his eighth year in charge of the program. "We are very excited about his well-rounded game. He can guard multiple positions and has good skill, passes really well and has the ability to play inside and out. Laurynas has had some really good experience competing for his country in international play for the last few years. He is a good student and I believe the kind of kid who will have a very good career at Campbell."
Vaištaras is one of four native Europeans on the 2020-21 Camel roster, joining junior
Milos Stajcic (Belgrade, Serbia), sophomore Jesús Carralero (Málaga, Spain) and fellow freshman Gediminas Mokšeckas (Vilnius, Lithuania) in Buies Creek this fall.
The four-man freshman class joins a Fighting Camel program that compiled three-straight postseason appearances from 2017-19 and won the 2019 Big South Conference regular season championship.
