Camels hold off PC 48-46

3 defensive stops in final 0:47 lift CU over Presbyterian

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell made three defensive stops in the final 47 seconds and held off Presbyterian 48-46 Thursday night at Gore Arena.

Cedric Henderson, Jr., scored on a drive with 24.1 seconds to play for what proved to be the deciding margin.  Ricky Clemons drew a charge from Trevon Reddish with 13 seconds to play; then after a missed free throw, defensive shot pressure caused Zeb Graham to miss at the rim just before the final horn.

Henderson led Campbell (7-7, 3-4) with 12 points, 7 rebounds and four blocked shots. Milos Stajcic came off the bench to add 9 points and six boards, while Joshua Lusane grabbed nine boards.

Reddish led Presbyterian (3-4, 1-2) with 15 points before fouling out. Transfer Winston Hill came off the bench to chip in 12 points and 12 rebounds in his first action with the Blue Hose.

Campbell led by 15 (43-28) on Jordan Whitfield's jumper with 11:13 remaining before Presbyterian went on an 18-3 run and tied the score at 46 on Hill's put back with 1:41 remaining.  However, that proved to be the final points for the Blue Hose, who shot 31.5 percent (17-54) on the night, 4-of-15 (.267) from 3-point distance, and 8-of-13 (.615) from the line.

The Camels shot 45.5 percent (20-44) on the game, made 5-of-12 threes (.417) and finished with a 34-33 edge on the glass.

Messiah Thompson hit back-to-back threes to cap a 13-2 run midway through the first half and the Camels led by 11 (28-17) at the break. CU held the Blue Hose to 23 percent shooting (6-26) in the opening period.

Presbyterian was playing for the first time since Dec. 31 after a 14-day pause for COVID-related issues.

The Camels and Blue Hose conclude their two-game series Friday at 7:00 p.m.
