BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After an eight-day break, Campbell (8-9, 4-6) hosts Charleston Southern Jan. 29-30 in a Big South Conference series. Friday's game is set for a 7:30 p.m. start, followed by Saturday's 5:30 p.m. tip. Both games will air on ESPN+.
Campbell was scheduled to play Charleston Southern Jan. 24-25, but that series was moved by the league in order to accommodate schedule alterations due to COVID-19 protocols. USC Upstate was originally scheduled to play this weekend in Buies Creek, but a pause in the Spartans' program forced another change.
CSU (1-13, 0-10) has lost 10-straight games to open Big South play. The Bucs fell at Gardner-Webb Jan. 24 (74-62) and 25 (80-71) in their most recent series.
In its last series, Campbell fell to Radford 97-91 in 3OT on Jan. 19 before dropping a 67-61 decision to the Highlanders one day later. Senior
Jordan Whitfield scored a career-high 28 points in the opener.
Joshua Lusane registered his first career double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
- In the two-game series with the Highlanders, Whitfield averaged 24 points, 4 assists, shot 58.6% from the floor (17-29) and 53.5% (8-15) from 3-point distance.
- Charleston Southern is led by preseason Big South player of the year Phlandrous Fleming, who ranks 3rd in the league in scoring (19.5), 5th in rebounding (6.3), 1st in FT% (.846), 3rd in steals (1.7) and 4th in 3-point FG (2.4) per game.
- Campbell continues to lead the Big South - and ranks 17th nationally - in field goal percentage (.504). The Camels also lead the league in turnover margin (+2.7) and assist-turnover ratio (1.1).
- While Charleston Southern is last in the Big South in team FG% (.406), the Bucs ranks 2nd in free throw percentage (.713).
- Campbell is 3-3 at home this season, while Charleston Southern is 0-5 in true road games (0-4 at Big South teams).
- Campbell's Jordan Whitfield (15.2) and Cedric Henderson, Jr. (15.0) rank 6th and 7th, respectively, among Big South scoring leaders.
- Due to the impact of COVID-19, Campbell University will begin its 2020-21 men's and women's basketball seasons without spectators at home events. Only essential game management personnel and media will be permitted in Gore Arena for Fighting Camel home dates, Fans will still be able to watch all home Campbell Basketball games and road Big South contests on ESPN+.
CAMPBELL-CHARLESTON SOUTHERN NOTES
- Charleston Southern owns a slim 28-27 edge in the all-time series with the Camels, including a 9-7 advantage since Campbell re-joined the Big South Conference in 2011-12.
- Last year, the teams split the two-game series with each winning on the road. On Jan. 16, 2020, Phlandrous Fleming and Deontaye Buskey scored 21 points each to lead Charleston Southern to a 77-62 victory at Gore Arena. Austin McCullough came off the bench to lead the Camels with 11 points. On Feb. 20, 2020 at Charleston, Jordan Whitfield came off the bench to score 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and lead the Camels to a 66-51 victory. Fleming led CSU with 18 points and 10 boards. CU jumped to a 41-21 lead at the half and held CSU to 28% shooting for the game.
- The CSU Field House holds the distinction of being the 2nd-smallest capacity (881) home court in the Division I ranks (USC Upstate's Hodge Center seats 833). Campbell's old venue -- Carter Gym -- was the country's smallest men's setting (947 seats) before CSU reconfigured its building and Upstate joined D1. CU moved into the 3,095-seat Gore Arena before the 2008-09 season.
- Campbell and Charleston Southern have met twice in Big South Championship games. The Bucs claimed the 1987 final 64-63 at Savannah, Ga. Campbell won the 1992 title game 67-53 to secure its first NCAA tournament berth.
- Along with Radford, Winthrop and UNC Asheville, Campbell and Charleston Southern are the lone Big South Conference members remaining since league play began in 1985-86. Campbell participated in the Atlantic Sun Conference from 1994-2011.
CAMELS ON THE WORLD WIDE LEADER
- Campbell's Feb. 4 game at UNC Asheville has been chosen for the Big South ESPNU Wildcard series. The contest will tip-off at 7pm at Kimmel Arena. The game will the ninth for the Camels in the Big South ESPNU Wildcard series. CU hosted two games on ESPNU in 2019.
- This is the eighth year of the Big South's ESPNU Wildcard series, which again features six broadcasts –- Jan. 4 (at Radford 79, Hampton 66), Jan. 14 (at Winthrop 72, Longwood 61), Jan. 19 (Winthrop 72, at Presbyterian 58), Jan. 28 (UNC Asheville at Winthrop), Feb. 4 and Feb. 18 -- that are selected 7-14 days in advance.
- A total of 32 games have been played in the series that began in 2013-14, and while the home teams are 22-10, the 32 games have been decided by an average of 8.66 points, with 19 of those being decided by single-digits.
