BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Ricky Clemons' 3-point play with 10 seconds to play and a final defensive stop lifted Campbell over Charleston Southern 59-58 Friday night at Gore Arena.
After Phlandrous Fleming gave the Bucs a 58-56 lead on a pullup jumper with 33 seconds to play, Lusane grabbed an offensive rebound and dropped the ball off to Clemons, who completed his second old-fashioned 3-point play in the final 2:59 to put CU back in front.
Fleming had a chance to win the contest, but his 3-pointer hit the back of the rim and bounced away as time experience.
Cedric Henderson, Jr. led Campbell (9-9, 5-6) with 23 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the line. Lusane added 10 points, a career-high 9 assists and seven rebounds, and Clemons scored all 10 of his points in the final period.
Fleming topped Charleston Southern (1-14, 0-11) with 17 points, while Melvin Edwards Jr., TJ Porter and Sean Price added eight apiece.
In a tight second period – neither team led by more than three over the last 15:15 of play – Charleston Southern went in front 49-47 on Ja'Quavian Florence's free throws with 8:52 remaining. Clemons, however, made both ends of a 1-and-1 to knot the score at 49 with 7:59 to go.
Henderson's foul shots pushed the Camels ahead 56-53 with 2:00 to play, but Florence's 3-point play drew the Bucs even with 1:30 remaining. Fleming pulled up from 15 feet to give CSU its second lead of the second half before Clemons' go-ahead and-one.
CU finished with 16 assists on 21 field goals, shot 43 percent from the floor and finished with a 33-27 lead on the glass. Charleston Southern, which finished 21-of-48 (.438) from the floor, suffered its third one-possession setback during its 11-game losing streak.
Campbell hit six-straight shots and grabbed an early lead thanks to a 13-1 run midway through the first half. The Camels led 21-12 when Whitfield dropped a floater with 6:54 to play in the opening period. However, the Bucs clawed back within 31-26 at the break, thanks in part to threes from Edwards, Jamir Moore and Fleming.
Friday's game was the 56th between the two Big South Conference charter members in the series, which is now evenly divided (28-28).
The same two teams conclude the series Saturday in a 5:30 p.m. start.
