Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell moved back into the win column after defeating Longwood 55-54 Saturday afternoon in Gore Arena.
Campbell (6-4, 3-2) and its Big South-leading defense came out on top over Longwood and its top-ranked offense (5-7, 4-3) as the Fighting Camels bounced back after suffering back-to-back losses at High Point.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Longwood set a fast-paced tempo early as both teams combined for 40 shot attempts in the first quarter as Campbell held an 11-10 edge at the end of the period
- The Fighting Camels opened the second quarter on an 7-3 run and led by as many as seven following a 3-pointer by Tatyana Carver with 2:26 remaining in the half
- Akila Smith scored four straight for the Lancers to close out the half, making it a 28-25 Campbell lead at the break
- Longwood earned its first lead since midway through the first quarter on a jumper from Anne-Hamilton Leroy until the Camels answered with another 7-3 run capped off on a possession that featured three offensive boards and resulted in two free throws by Taya Bolden
- Both teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 39-39 as the Campbell defense hunkered down to force five turnovers and outscore Longwood 12-3 to start behind three-pointers by Serranho and Faith Price and six straight points from Bolden
- Kyla McMakin scored 10 straight in response, making it an one-point game with less than a minute remaining
- Campbell held the ball with 37 seconds to go and regained possession following a missed shot after Longwood tipped the rebound out of bounds with 24 seconds remaining
- Shy Tuelle forced a jumper with four seconds on the clock leaving the Lancers with not enough time to get another shot up, giving Campbell the 55-54 win

- McMakin led the Lancers with a game-high 23 points while Akila Smith recorded 12 points, 11 boards and seven blocks
- Bolden and Serranho led the scoring efforts for Campbell behind 14 points apiece with Tuelle provided 11
- Micaila Coleman scored a season-best eight points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards
- Bolden also finished with 10 rebounds marking her fourth double-double of the season
- Campbell held Longwood to five shot attempts from behind the arc, the fewest of the season, as the Lancers were held without a three-pointer until 2:41 in the fourth quarter
- Longwood was also held to just five assists, marking another season-low for the Lancers
- Campbell held a 17-8 advantage in points off turnovers, forcing 19 turnovers in the game
- The Camels also held a 22-13 advantage in second chance points thanks in part to a season-best 24 offensive boards
