BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Campbell Fighting Camels (8-7, 3-0) won their sixth match in a row in a four-set victory Friday night over UNC Asheville (2-10, 0-3). The offense had its best showing of the season hitting a season-high .299 in the win.
The offense was on a torrid pace to begin the match, hitting .586 as a team through two sets paced by
Sarah Colla sitting at .900 with nine kills on 10 attacks. Colla finished tied for the team-high along with
Lailah Green at 16 kills. Colla did so on .481 hitting for the match.
"Overall, I thought we passed really well for the entire match which allowed our offense to run the way we it's supposed to run," head coach
Greg Goral said. "We were able to utilize all of our attackers and get kills everywhere. I'm really happy with how we were able to execute for most of the match."
Campbell jumped out to an early lead hitting .424 in the first set behind five kills each from Colla and Green. The Camels trailed 18-16 in the set before a 7-0 run gave them a five point advantage late. Set point was capped by a bit of a circus save from
Claranne Fechter to set up a Green kill.
The Camels dominated the second set, hitting .640 in the frame with 17 kills and just one error. Green hit 5 for 5 in the set and Colla hit 4 for 4. The set is the most efficient of the season and allowed Campbell to cruise to a 25-14 set win.
The Bulldogs turned the tables in the third and responded with a 25-14 set win of their own. After such an efficient first two sets, the Camels committed 11 errors and found themselves hitting -.056 in the frame.
The offense returned in the fourth set to help Campbell close out the match with a 25-20 set win. Campbell got back to hitting .300 led by five more kills from Colla. The set was ied at 18-18, but another late surge pushed the Camels to the finish line. The defense was also big in the fourth set and posted three blocks.
Madee Miner orchestrated the offense for the Camels and dished out a season-high 32 assists, while
Emily Mitter added 19.
Claranne Fechter led the defense with 18 digs while three Camels also collected three blocks.
Asheville's Molly Hackett led the Bulldogs with a match-high 20 kills while Grace Volk dished out a match-high 43 assists.
Friday was the first conference match since the 2019 season that spectators from outside of the immediate campus community could attend, something that was certainly noticed by the Camels.
"It was great to have a large crowd here, it helped energize our team," Goral said. "We had a middle school here making lots of noise, as well as a lot of Campbell students and people from the community giving us a lot of support. It is always better when you can play in front of a lot of fans."
Campbell returns to Gore Arena tomorrow for a 2 p.m. tilt with USC Upstate. The Spartans picked up a 3-0 win over Hampton Friday night and will enter Saturday's match at 2-1 in the Big South. That match can be found on ESPN+.
