BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Tony Muskett threw for three touchdowns, Juwon Farri ran for 111 yards and a score and defending Big South champion Monmouth defeated Campbell 34-17 Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Lonnie Moore IV (seven catches for 115 yards) and Terrance Greene, Jr. (four for 104) both topped 100 receiving yards for the Hawks (4-3, 3-0) who have started 3-0 in Big South play for the fifth-straight year and tied a league record with eight-consecutive conference road wins.
Caleb Snead hauled in six receptions for 178 yards – the third-most yards by a receiver in Camel history – for Campbell (3-3, 2-1).
Wiley Hartley completed 19-of-37 passes with two TDs for 314 yards.
Campbell's three-game win streak came to an end after the Hawks out-gained the Camels 168-87 on the ground and 454-401 overall.
Muskett completed 17-of-31 passes for 286 yards and recorded a touchdown pass for the 11th-straight game.
The Hawks took the opening kick-off and drove 75 yards in 10 plays, capped by Muskett's 18-yard completion to Terrance Greene Jr.
Monmouth extended the lead to 10-0 on Nick Null's 39-yard field goal after Campbell fumbled on its first play from scrimmage.
Campbell then drove into Monmouth territory and on fourth down at the 43,
Wiley Hartley connected with Snead on a slant pattern that the senior wideout carried all the way to the end zone for his eighth TD catch this season.
Snead, who has at least one TD reception in all six games this year, set a Big South Conference record for most consecutive games with a scoring catch to start a season. His first quarter score also tied the school record for touchdown receptions of 23, set by Aaron Blockmon (2015-18).
Isaac Riffle connected on a 24-yard field goal with 7:28 to play in the second quarter, but the Hawks struck twice on long scoring passes to take a two-touchdown lead at the break.
Muskett hit Greene with a 68-yard pass with 6:25 left in the half, then connected on a 42-yard TD with Lonnie Moore IV with 3:53 to play in the second period.
Null's 48-yard field goal extended the Monmouth lead to 27-10 with 1:04 remaining in the third quarter.
The Hawks drove 75 yards with Farri carrying the final 10 to give Monmouth a 34-10 advantage with 2:32 to play.
Hartley connected with
Cameron Bent on a 31-yard scoring pass with 41 seconds remaining for the final margin.
CJ Tillman and
Keshawn Thompson led Campbell with 11 tackles each. Ryan Moran (11) and Tyrese Wright had double-figure stops for the Hawks.
Campbell entered the game as the nation's leader in turnover margin (+2.4); but committed three Saturday.
The Camels host Kennesaw State next Saturday (Oct. 23) in a 4:00 p.m. Homecoming Day kickoff.
