ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
Tyler Young scored twice and set up another goal in the first half hour and Campbell went on to defeat UNC Asheville 5-1 Wednesday at Greenwood Field.
Campbell (11-3-1, 6-0-0) extended its win streak to five games and clinched a first-round bye in next month's Big South Conference championship. UNC Asheville (1-11-0, 0-6-0) dropped its 11th-straight decision.
With one victory in its last two league outings, the Camels would clinch the regular season title.
Jamie Lamb,
Kemy Amiche and
Diego Konincks also scored for the Camels, who finished with a 14-9 edge in shots and did not allow an Asheville attempt on target for the first 88 minutes.
"We are pleased to get another three points towards the league race," said Campbell head coach
Dustin Fonder. "I'm proud of the way our group ended the match early. It's easy to talk about; but takes focus to get it done. Because we executed well early it allowed us to get substitutes more game experience while allowing others much needed rest. Hopefully this will help us have the right energy levels for our next match Saturday. We look forward to getting back on our home field."
The Camels took the lead in the 10th minute when
Kemy Amiche played a diagonal ball to
Jake Morris, who slid it back to Young, who finished into the lower left corner.
In the 23rd, Lamb headed in Young's corner kick to double the advantage.
The lead reached three goals in the 28th minute when Morris laid the ball off to
Moses Mensah, whose cross was nodded home by Young at the near post. Young leads the league in points (27), goals (9) and assists (9).
Braden Teller set up Amiche for his fifth goal of the season in the 36th and the Camels led 4-0 at the break.
Campbell improved to 13-0-1 all time in matches when Young has at least one point, including a 9-0-1 mark this season.
Diego Konincks stretched the lead to five in the 82nd minute from the penalty spot after
Gerard Broussard was fouled in the area.
Asheville avoided the shutout with just 1:24 remaining in the contest when Evan Lewis finished a counterattack.
Campbell took 13 corner kicks to just one for Asheville and led the Bulldogs 10-1 in shots on target.
The Camels host USC Upstate Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in their final home regular season contest.
