BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Coming off a season in which it reached the Big South Conference title game, Campbell opens exhibition play Friday at 7:00 p.m. vs. NCAA Division II member St. Augustine's.
According to University policy, face coverings are required when inside any Campbell University facility, until further notice. This requirement applies to all students, faculty, staff and visitors regardless of vaccination status.
A clear bag policy is also in effect for all games in Gore Arena.
Campbell (17-11, 11-6 in '20-21) returns all five starters and nine other letter winners from last season's squad that placed third in the Big South regular season.
A member of the CIAA, St. Augustine's did not compete in the 2020-21 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Falcons posted a 12-18 record in 2019-20.
Now in his ninth year at the post, Campbell head coach
Kevin McGeehan has led the Camels to 89 wins over the past 5 seasons, the highest total in CU's Division I era (since '77-78).
- Campbell returns 99 percent of its points and minutes played from last season. Only Delaware (100%/100%), St. Francis (PA) (100%/100%), Saint Mary's (100%/99.9%) and Merrimack (99%/99%) return a higher percentage of points and minutes among all 350 NCAA Division I schools.
- Campbell was picked in to win the Big South Conference North Division in the annual preseason poll of league coaches and media. Defending champion Winthrop was picked to win the South Division.
- Cedric Henderson, Jr. was named to the preseason Big South all-conference first team. A senior forward, Henderson led the league in FG% (.503) and was 6th in scoring (15.0).
- Senior guard Jordan Whitfield was named 2nd-team preseason all-conference. He was 7th in the BSC in scoring (14.6) last year and 2nd in FG% (.486).
- Also returning from the '20-21 lineup is senior guard Ricky Clemons (6.7 ppg), who was named to the Big South all-tournament team. Junior center Joshua Lusane (8.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg) and senior guard Austin McCullough (6.6 ppg, 39.3% 3FG) are also back.
- Junior guard Messiah Thompson (8.4 ppg) average 10.4 points vs. Big South opponents last season as the top backcourt reserve.
- Campbell opens the regular season at home Nov. 9 vs. William Peace. CU then heads to the Duke Veterans Day Weekend Showcase to meet 2021 NCAA tournament participant Hartford (Nov. 12) and the ninth-ranked Blue Devils (Nov. 13).
