Camels roll by Falcons in preseason opener

McCullough leads with 13 points, Henderson and Thompson chip in 12 each

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Austin McCullough led three Camels in double figures with 13 points and Campbell rolled to a 75-48 exhibition win over St. Augustine's Friday night at Gore Arena.

Cedric Henderson, Jr. and Messiah Thompson added 12 points each for the Camels, the preseason Big South Conference North Division favorites.  Campbell scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed against the Division II Falcons.

McCullough made 5-of-8 from the floor, 3-of-3 from the line and threw down a pair of dunks for CU, which shot 53 percent from the game and outscored St. Augustine's 40-14 in the paint.

Henderson hit 5-of-7 shots, while Thompson came off the bench to make 3-of-4 triples and deal five assists in 21 minutes.  Joshua Lusane chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Dhashon Dyson led St. Augustine's, which did not compete in the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with 14 points.  The Falcons made 36 percent of their shots, 4-of-17 from 3-point distance.

Campbell made five of its first seven shots and led 13-2 at the first media timeout.  The Falcons clawed back within 23-19 on Dyson's bucket in transition with 9:24 left the half.  However, the Camels held SAU to just one field goal the rest of the period and led 39-22 at the break.

The Camels extended the lead to as many as 32 (71-39) when PJ Carter hit a pullup jumper in the lane with 3:17 to play.

Campbell opens the regular season Nov. 9 at home vs. William Peace before heading to the Duke Veterans Day Weekend Showcase Nov. 12-13.
