BUIES CREEK, N.C. – It was déjà vu for the Camels and Aggies that saw Campbell (15-8, 10-1) NC A&T (15-8, 7-4) in five sets for the second time this season. Just as in the first meeting, Campbell won each of the first two sets before surrendering the third and fourth but ultimately hanging on for the win in five.
Chloe Cook notched a career-high 20 kills on the night while adding 12 digs for her second career double-double to pace the Camel offense.
Campbell came out of the gates hot with a 25-18 first set. Cook was especially strong early, notching six kills in the opening frame. After being tied at 16-16 in the set, Campbell hit the gas and pulled away for the win with a 9-2 run to close the set.
It was more of the same in the second set as Campbell hit .300 during the frame and held NC A&T to just .065. The Camels never let the second set get close and led by as many as 10 at 21-11 en route to a 25-17 set win. Colla paced the offense in the second set with five kills and zero errors.
The match appeared all but over in the third with Campbell holding a solid 19-11 lead looking to close it out. But the Aggies had other ideas and stormed back to win the set. The Camels fell out of rhythm and committed five errors late in the set to aid the comeback as A&T closed the set on a 15-5 run to take it 26-24.
A&T kept the momentum rolling right through the fourth set for a 25-19 win to force the fifth set. Another big Aggie run propelled them to the finish line. After being down 14-13, they rattled off a 7-1 run to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Campbell escaped with a 15-11 win in the fifth set. Colla tallied three kills and Campbell's defense held A&T to hitting .091 with three blocks in the fourth. It was tense for most of the fifth set with neither team taking more than a point advantage until Campbell led 11-9. From there a pair of kills from
Lailah Green, an Aggie error and, fittingly, a kill from Cook for her 20th of the night ended the match.
Elsewhere on the stat sheet, Colla and Green both logged double-digit kills at 15 and 14, respectively. Mitter posted a double-double with 26 assist and 16 digs while
Claranne Fechter had a match-high 24 digs.
Naiya Sawtelle led the Aggies with 16 kills and Eddie Brewer had a match-high 36 assists along with seven kills.
Tonight's win sets up a big match tomorrow with first place on the line in the Big South. High Point will bring an 11-0 record to Gore Arena to face 10-1 Campbell. That match begins at 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
