Camels secure unbeaten Big South regular season

Regular season champs play to 0-0 draw at 2nd place High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – For the second time in three years, Campbell completed an unbeaten Big South Conference regular season after playing to a scoreless draw Saturday at High Point.

The Camels (12-3-2, 7-0-1) had already clinched the regular season title a week ago and the top seed in next month's Big South Championship.  High Point (6-6-3, 4-0-3) closes the regular season Wednesday at last place UNC Asheville with a three-point margin for the second seed and a first round bye.

Campbell posted its second-straight shutout Saturday by allowing only two shots on target all night.  High Point, which has surrendered only one goal in seven league matches, held the nation's fourth-leading attack scoreless for just the third time this season.

Edu Rodriguez dove to his right to save Sebastian Chalbaud's free kick in the 53rd minute – High Point's first shot on target all night.  With less than 20 seconds left in the second overtime period, Mason Marcey had a chance in the Camel area, but Rodriguez did not have to move to make the stop and close out his fourth shutout of the season.

Kemy Amiche had an opportunity in the 26th minute, but the Camel freshman's left-footed shot stayed high of the bar and landed on the roof of the net.

In the 58th minute, Rodriguez' clearance was flicked on to Jake Morris, and the winger lofted the ball over High Point keeper Holden Trent, but the attempted stayed high of the bar.

After 69 minutes, Tyler Young's free kick curled over the wall and missed just inches wide of the left post.

In the first overtime period, Morris drove a low pass across the face of the goal that Panther defender Cooper Lindfelt barely cleared by the top right corner for a corner kick.

High Point finished with a 15-12 edge in shots, while both teams had two on target and took six corner kicks.

NOTES: In the six-plus years since head coach Dustin Fonder moved to Buies Creek from High Point, Campbell stands 4-2-3 against the Panthers… CU is now 25-1-4 in its last 30 games (regular season and tournament) vs. Big South foes…  Campbell closes the regular season Wednesday (Nov. 3) at Omaha (7:00 p.m. CT) before hosting a league semifinal Nov. 10.
