Young’s assist trick leads Camels over GWU 6-1

Nation's 11th-best attack erupts for season-high 6 goals

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Gerard Broussard scored twice, Tyler Young provided three assists and Campbell defeated Gardner-Webb 6-1 Wednesday night at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

The Camels (8-3-1, 3-0-0) stayed atop the Big South table by hitting season highs for goals overall and in a half (5).  Entering the match as the nation's 11th-best scoring offense, five different Camels scored and Young notched the program's first assists trick in nearly 11 years.

"I don't think we played with the right level of energy and urgency and didn't play our brand of soccer in the first half," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder.  "At halftime, we went in and challenged them, they came out and rose to the occasion."

Campbell outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs (2-9, 1-2) 17-2 in the second period with nine of those attempts on target.

"We were a lot more unselfish in the second half and moving the ball," said Fonder.  "Tyler Young was excellent sharing the ball. When we share the ball, we're a dangerous team."

The Camels jumped in front in the sixth minute when Broussard jumped on a loose ball in the box and scored his second goal of the season.

However, the Runnin' Bulldogs drew level in the 23rd after Aymane Sordo controlled the ball near the top of the Camel area and unleashed a left-footed shot into the top left corner.

The Camels nearly went back in front after 37 minutes, but GWU keeper Mallel Rios dove to his left to stop Jake Morris' blast at the back post.

Just 1:47 into the second period Rios was only able to deflect Young's shot, and senior George Bediko knocked in the rebound for his first career goal.

Morris' 53rd minute blast beat Rios, but not the crossbar to leave the margin at one.

Young set up Kemy Amiche in the 58th minute and the Frenchman curled a left-footed shot inside the top left corner of the net to push the cushion to 3-1.

After 73 minutes Rios could only parry Morris' blast from the top of the box, and Broussard headed in the rebound for his third goal of the season and first multi-goal game of his career.

As he broke in free on goal, Broussard was fouled from behind in the 83rd minute by Samuel Ritner, who was sent off.  Morris then deposited the resulting free kick in the top right corner for his second goal in as many games.

The Camels rounded off the night when Owen Mikoy played a diagonal pass to Young, who laid the ball off to freshman Bjarne Lips for his first career goal.

Ranked No. 8 in this week's South Region poll, Campbell finished with a season-high 27 shots – 12 on target – and allowed only six by the visitors.  CU took 10 corner kicks to just one for GWU.

NOTES: Young's assist trick was the first 3-assist performance by a Camel since Mitchell Cardenas set up three goals in a win over Belmont on Oct. 28, 2010… Campbell is unbeaten (7-0-1) in its last eight meetings with GWU and has not lost to the Runnin' Bulldogs since 2013… The Camels stand 23-2-4 in their last 29 matches at the Eakes Complex, including a 6-1-1 mark in the 2021 season…. CU is now 12-0-1 in matches when Young has at least one point, including an 8-0-1 mark this season.  The Big South's points leader (7G, 8A) has at least one point (4G, 7A) during CU's 7-match home unbeaten streak (6-0-1) and has figured in at least one goal in 5-straight matches overall…. Campbell is now 21-1-3 in its last 25 games (regular season and tournament) vs. Big South foes... CU travels to UNC Asheville Saturday for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
