Camels grab five-set win at NC A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Fighting Camels played five sets for the second straight night, this time coming away with a 3-2 road win over NC A&T. The script was completely flipped from just one night prior as Campbell (10-8, 5-1) won the first two sets, dropped a pair, and pulled the match out in the fifth.

It is Campbell's first time playing five sets in back-to-back matches since Oct. 28-29, 2016. This was Campbell's fourth five-setter of the season and the first win in a match going the distance.

Campbell grabbed a narrow win in the first set at 25-23. The Camels trailed 23-22 with A&T to serve, but an error returned serve to Campbell and set up a Chloe Cook ace and Lailah Green kill to put the set away. Campbell hit just .077 in the first set but managed to do just enough for the win.

The Camels took a two set advantage with a 25-20 second set. The attack was more efficient in the second hitting .229, led by Sarah Colla's four kills in the frame. Campbell never scored more than three consecutive points, but kept a just enough distance from the Aggies for a comfortable win.

A&T won the third set 25-21. The Camels trailed for most of the set but fought back to tie the set at 18-18. The Aggies closed strong and scored five of the final six points to end the third. A&T had the best hitting set of the night by either side at .375 in the frame.

The Aggies forced a fifth set with a 25-23 win in the fourth set. Campbell jumped out to an early lead and did not trail until 19-18 in the set. Campbell stayed close the rest of the way, but couldn't finish the job and allowed the match to head to a fifth set.

It was a tight fifth set with neither team ever leading by more than two. Trailing 13-12, three straight kills from Green, Patterson and Green again pushed Campbell to the finish line. Green didn't have her best night (10 kills, -.053 hitting) but stepped up late and logged three kills in the fifth set.

Four Camels reached double-digit kills on the night, led by Chloe Cook with 16. Colla added 15 and Melody Paige had 13 along with Green's 10. Claranne Fechter led the team with 24 digs. Madee Miner and Emily Mitter each posted double-doubles for the second consecutive night.

The Aggies were led by Naiya Sawelle and Shaylynn Hall at 13 kills each.

It's a quick turnaround this week for the Camels, who return to Gore Arena for a Tuesday night match against Winthrop on Oct. 12. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. and the match will be available on ESPN+.
