DURHAM, N.C. –
Ricky Clemons' driving layup with a minute to play and a defensive stop on the final possession lifted Campbell to a 68-67 win over Hartford Friday in the Duke Veterans Day Weekend Showcase at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
In a second half where the lead changed seven times, Campbell had the chance to go in front by two possessions with 20 seconds to play, but
Jordan Whitfield's pullup jumper went in an out of the basket. Hartford rebounded and called its final time out with 14.9 seconds to play.
Campbell (2-0), however, had three fouls to give and did so with 9.7, 8.0 and 4.2 seconds remaining. Hartford (0-2) inbounded the ball, but the Hawks were unable to get a shot off before the final horn.
Clemons led five Camels in double figures with 12 points, plus four rebounds and four assists. Whitfield and
Austin McCullough finished with 11 points apiece, while
Messiah Thompson and Jesus Carralero added 10 each.
Cedric Henderson, Jr., chipped in eight points and eight boards for the Camels, who committed just four turnovers on the day.
Hunter Marks led Hartford with 18 points, including 4-of-5 threes, Austin Williams added 13 with seven assists and David Shriver 10 points for the Hawks, who won the 2021 America East Conference tournament and played eventual national champion Baylor in the NCAA tournament.
Campbell hit just 4-of-17 threes on Coach K Court, but outscored the Hawks 40-24 in the paint. The Camels converted 13 Hartford miscues into an 11-2 edge in points off turnovers and finished with a 10-2 advantage in second-chance points.
Moses Flowers (9 points, 9 rebounds) made back-to-back threes to put Hartford in front 53-48 with 11:30 to play. However, Thompson started a 10-0 Camel burst with a pullup corner three,
Milos Stajcic followed his own miss, Clemons scored underneath and Whitfield converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to put CU in front 58-53 with 8:23 remaining.
Clemons' drive provided CU with its largest advantage (63-57) with 5:08 to go, but Dejuan Clayton twice converted at the rim and Marks drained a wing three to flip the advantage to the Hawks (64-63) with 2:58 to go.
Henderson answered with a reverse layup on the next possession to put CU back in front, Carralero hit the first of two free throws, and Clemons' finish in the paint provided a 68-64 edge.
Michael Dunne then made a step back three from the right wing to cut the gap to one, but Hartford never got another shot off.
Campbell finished 28-of-63 (.444) from the floor and made 8-of-9 free throws. Hartford canned 13-of-26 (.500) threes and shot 46 percent (25-54) overall, while claiming a 34-31 edge on the boards.
Hartford made 7-of-13 threes in the opening half and led 38-34 at the break. Marks had 12 first-half points and Shriver 10 for the Hawks, who shot 48 percent (14-29) before intermission.
Campbell trailed by 10 early, but used a 10-0 burst to cut the gap. The Camels shot 40.6 percent (13-32) in the first half.
The Camels will meet ninth-ranked Duke Saturday at 8 p.m. on ACC Network Extra to cap the Veterans Day Weekend Showcase. Hartford and Army West Point also play Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
