BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell topped Charleston Southern in the regular season finale to close the season 19-9 and with a program-record 14-2 mark in conference play. With other results around the league, Campbell was locked into the two-seed in the Big South tournament before first serve.
As the two-seed, Campbell will play its first match at 4:30 on Saturday in the Big South semifinal. The Camels will face the winner of the 3-seed vs 4-seed match from Friday. All matches of the Big South tournament will be hosted by Campbell and played in Gore Arena.
Madee Miner recorded her 2000
th career assist in the opening set of the match, becoming just the 7
th Camel in program history to reach that mark. She finished with 17 and now sits at 2,013 for her career.
She dished out a handful of her 17 assists to
Sarah Colla, who paced the Camels with 15 kills on .344 hitting.
Lailah Green added seven while
Chloe Cook had five.
Campbell's largest set-win of the match was even closer than the score showed in the first set. The Camels and Buccaneers were locked at 20-20 before a Campbell 5-0 burst ended the set at 25-20. The run featured just one Camel kill and four CSU errors. Colla was at her best in the opening frame with seven kills.
The second set was tightly contested and featured plenty of drama. Tied at 23-23, a red card was shown to Charleston Southern coach David McFatrich, awarding Campbell a key point and returning the serve to the Camels. Campbell went on to win the second set 26-24.
It was another close one in the third with Campbell prevailing 25-22. The Camels were poised to put it away, but a 7-1 CSU run got the Bucs right back into the mix. They tied, but never led in the late stages of the set with Campbell holding on for the straight-set win.
Charleston Southern recorded more kills than the Camels (47-39), but committed more errors as well, hitting .250 as a team to Campbell's .267. CSU was led by Peyton Thompson's 19 kills on .341 hitting. Indigo Young tallied 13 kills and five blocks, four of them solo. Emma Minnick dished out a match-high 38 assists.
