High Point upsets CU 2-1 in Big South final

Richards equalizes in 81st minute for regular season champs

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Skyler Prillaman's golden goal in the 94th minute lifted High Point to a 2-1 win over Campbell Sunday in the final of the Big South Conference Championship at the Eakes Athletics Complex.

Regular season champion Campbell (12-4-2) equalized through Jackie Richards in the 81st minute to force overtime, but the second-seeded Panthers (10-7-2) claimed their first league title since 2017.

Just three minutes into overtime, Salome' Prat slid a ball down the right channel to Prillaman, who struck a shot from the right edge of the box that sailed into the top left corner of Reaghan Duval's net for her seventh goal of the season.

In a rematch of the 2020-21 final, won 4-3 last April by Campbell at High Point, the Panthers won in spite of the fact that the Camels had more shots on target (12) than the visitors produced overall (10).

However, Magdalena Schwartz' 30th minute strike, Prillaman's winner and 11 saves by Morgan Hairston proved to be enough to deal Campbell its first home loss of the season (8-1-1).

"Credit High Point. They're a really, really good team," said Campbell head coach Samar Azem.  "We created a lot of opportunities. Their keeper was outstanding today.  I'm proud of our team coming out in the second half with a different mindset, and I'm so proud of these girls for what they've done this year.  Winning the tournament in the spring, then coming back to win the regular season in the fall. They've re-written the history books for Campbell women's soccer."

Trailing 1-0 at the break, Campbell doubled up the Panthers in shots (8-4) in the final half.  Amber Liston's 48th minute shot sailed just high of the cross bar.  After 66 minutes, Richards hit a heavy left-footed shot that High Point Hairston was able to deflect over her bar.

Campbell equalized in the 81st minute when Elyssa Nowowieski slid a pass across the face of the goal and Richards volleyed home her seventh of the season and second in the tournament.

The Camels finished the day with a 16-10 edge in shots, 12-7 in attempts on target, and took six corner kicks to four by High Point.  Duval made four saves in the Camel nets.

Schwarz nearly put the Panthers in front in the 28th minute when her shot from a crowded box was headed toward the right post, but Camel left back Mary Tierney cleared the ball off the line.

Less than two minutes later, however, the German forward put the visitors in front.  Schwarz collected a pass from Alex Deperno, took a couple of dribbles and unleashed a left-footed shots from the top left corner of the box that sailed into the upper right corner of Duval's net.

Three times in the final 13 minutes of the half, the Camels had clear opportunities to equalize.  Amber Liston drove a right-footed shot in the 32nd minute that forced a diving save from Hairston.

Moments later, Elyssa Nowowieski curled a 25-yard free kick around the wall, but Hairston was in position to make the save.

In the final minute of the opening period, Nowowieski slid the ball to Liston just beyond the Panther back line to Liston, who turned and shot right into Hairston's grasp.

Prillman was named tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by Prat, London Lewis and Shaylyn Owen.

Nowowieski, Richards and defender Delaney Baumbick represented Campbell on the all-tournament squad.
