WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jaylen Sims and Mike Okauru combined for 40 points and UNC Wilmington rallied to defeat Campbell 65-58 Wednesday at Trask Coliseum.
The Seahawks (6-5) trailed 51-44 after
Austin McCullough scored on a backdoor cut with 11:16 remaining. However, Okauru scored 15 of his 17 points in the last 10:50 to lift UNCW to its third-straight win.
Jaylen Sims led all scorers with 23 points for UNCW, which shot 41 percent (21-51) from the floor, but made as many free throws (17-23) as the Camels attempted (14-17).
McCullough led the Camels (7-4) with 15 points, including 4-of-7 threes, while
Jordan Whitfield added 13 and
Ricky Clemons 11, plus 8 rebounds. Campbell shot 38 percent from the floor and made 6-of-18 threes but missed 10 of its last 11 shots.
After trailing by as many as 11 in the opening period, the Camels used a 19-6 run late in the half and went into the dressing room tied at 31.
Campbell made 5 of its first 7 shots in the second period and took a 47-40 lead on Whitfield's pullup jumper with 12:30 to play. McCullough's lay-in pushed the lead back to seven (51-44), but UNCW responded with a 9-0 run.
The Camels regained the lead (58-56) on Clemons' stick back with 1:44 to play, but Okauru converted a 3-point play to put UNCW back in front and UNCW made both ends of a pair of 1-and-1 chances in the last 27.7 seconds to seal the victory.
NOTES:
- Campbell has held all 11 of its opponents below 70 points.
- Wednesday's loss marks the first time CU has dropped back-to-back games this year.
- The Camels return to action next Wednesday, Dec. 29 when they host Norfolk State at 7:30 p.m.
