UNCW rallies to defeat Camels 65-58

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jaylen Sims and Mike Okauru combined for 40 points and UNC Wilmington rallied to defeat Campbell 65-58 Wednesday at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks (6-5) trailed 51-44 after Austin McCullough scored on a backdoor cut with 11:16 remaining.  However, Okauru scored 15 of his 17 points in the last 10:50 to lift UNCW to its third-straight win.

Jaylen Sims led all scorers with 23 points for UNCW, which shot 41 percent (21-51) from the floor, but made as many free throws (17-23) as the Camels attempted (14-17).

McCullough led the Camels (7-4) with 15 points, including 4-of-7 threes, while Jordan Whitfield added 13 and Ricky Clemons 11, plus 8 rebounds.  Campbell shot 38 percent from the floor and made 6-of-18 threes but missed 10 of its last 11 shots.

After trailing by as many as 11 in the opening period, the Camels used a 19-6 run late in the half and went into the dressing room tied at 31.

Campbell made 5 of its first 7 shots in the second period and took a 47-40 lead on Whitfield's pullup jumper with 12:30 to play.  McCullough's lay-in pushed the lead back to seven (51-44), but UNCW responded with a 9-0 run.

The Camels regained the lead (58-56) on Clemons' stick back with 1:44 to play, but Okauru converted a 3-point play to put UNCW back in front and UNCW made both ends of a pair of 1-and-1 chances in the last 27.7 seconds to seal the victory.
