BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Austin McCullough scored 16 points to lead Campbell to a 74-56 win over Columbia International Tuesday night at Gore Arena.
Cedric Henderson, Jr. added 14 points, while Jesus Carralero and
Messiah Thompson chipped in 12 apiece for the Camels (7-2), who won their fifth in the last six games.
Devin Pope came off the bench to lead the Rams with 12 points. Jalen Brinson and Skyler McKinney added 10 each.
The Camels shot 67 percent (28-42) inside the arc and outscored the Rams 48-20 in the paint. A 6-foot-5 wing, McCullough made 8-of-9 shots, including three dunks.
Campbell led by 10 at the half and stretched the margin to 22 (66-44) on Thompson's wing three with 8:11 to play. CU committed a season-low six turnovers – just one in the second half on an offensive foul – and held its ninth-straight opponent to less than 70 points.
CU made its first nine shots inside the arc, never trailed, and led by as many as 12 in the opening half. The Rams pulled within five (22-17) on Pope's triple with 6:59 left in the opening period. However, McCullough scored on a backdoor slam and had three tip-ins in the last 4:07 to give the Camels a 38-28 lead at the break.
The Camels shot 56 percent (18-32) from the floor in the opening period, 18-of-23 from 2-point distance.
Columbia International hit 6-of-13 threes in the second half (.462), 8-of-22 on the night (.364) and shots 42 percent (21-50) for the game.
McCullough pulled down a game-high six rebounds and scored on all four of his offensive boards. Henderson made 7-of-10 from the floor. Carralero finished with three assists and three steals while making 6-of-11 shots.
Campbell entered the night ranked first in the Big South, 21st in the nation, in scoring defense (58.2).
NOTES
- Campbell stands 4-0 this season at the 3095-seat John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center / Gilbert Craig Gore Arena and has won its last 10 in Buies Creek.
- Campbell is off to a 7-2 start, its best record through nine games since the 2011-12 squad opened 8-1.
- The Camels have won their last 23 games against non-D I opponents.
- After a weeklong break for exams, the Camels return to action next Wednesday (Dec. 15) when they host Georgia Southern at 7 p.m.
