BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Riding a four-game win streak, Campbell travels to Hampton Thursday and Friday for a two-game series with the Pirates. Both games will tip off at 6:00 p.m. and air on ESPN+.
Due to COVID-19 pauses, Campbell (12-9, 8-6) has played its last eight games at home and won six of those outings. CU has not traveled since splitting a two-game set Jan. 9-10 at Longwood.
Most recently, the Camels rallied for a 72-71 win over USC Upstate last Thursday, then rode a late 16-2 run Friday to a 64-49 victory over the Spartans.
Last Thursday,
Jordan Whitfield hit a leaning baseline jumper with 8.8 seconds to play; then
Joshua Lusane partially blocked Tommy Bruner's runner in the closing seconds to preserve the lead.
Messiah Thompson scored a career-high 19 points off the bench, while Cedric Henderson, Jr added 16 and Whitfield finished with 14 for the Camels, who committed a season-low 6 turnovers and held the Spartans scoreless for the last 4:27.
One night later, Henderson scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the decisive 16-2 burst and the Camels limited Upstate to just one bucket over the last 8:56 of play. Whitfield added 15 points and a career-high 8 rebounds, while Thompson chipped in 10 points.
Hampton (9-11, 8-7) has alternated wins and losses in its last six games, most recently in Monday's 83-73 setback at Longwood. Big South scoring leader Davion Warren led the Pirates with 24 points, while Marquis Godwin added a career-high 21 and Russell Dean chipped in 14, plus 10 rebounds.
- Campbell continues to lead the Big South and rank 13th in the nation in field goal percentage (.500). Cedric Henderson, Jr. (.519) and Jordan Whitfield (.509) rank 1-2 among the league individual field goal percentage leaders. Henderson (15.9) and Whitfield also stand 6-7 among Big South scoring leaders.
- CU stands 3-6 in true road games this year, 2-4 at Big South teams. Hampton is 4-5 at home, 4-4 vs. the Big South at the HU Convocation Center.
- Due to the impact of COVID-19, Campbell University will begin its 2020-21 men's and women's basketball seasons without spectators at home events. Only essential game management personnel and media will be permitted in Gore Arena for Fighting Camel home dates, Fans will still be able to watch all home Campbell Basketball games and road Big South contests on ESPN+.
CAMPBELL-HAMPTON NOTES
- Hampton senior Davion Warren leads the Big South and ranks 6th in the nation in scoring (21.9). Sophomore Chris Shelton stands 3rd in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (.496).
- The Pirates rate 4th in the country in blocked shots per game (6.1), while 7-foot ODU transfer Dajour Dickens is 3rd individually (3.2).
- Neither Campbell (0-2 at the HU Convocation Center) nor Hampton (0-3 vs CU at Gore Arena) have won on the other's home floor since the Pirates joined the Big South. Every game except last year's 75-49 Camel win in Buies Creek has been decided by single digits.
- Both Hampton and USC Upstate are third-year members of the Big South Conference. Hampton left the MEAC prior to the 2018-19 season, while USC Upstate was formerly a member of the Atlantic Sun.
- Prior to the 2018-19 season, the Camels and Pirates had met once during Hampton's Division I era (since '95-96) in men's basketball, a 63-62 Campbell win Jan. 15, 1996 in Buies Creek at old Carter Gym.
- Campbell and Hampton met four times between 1971-72 and 1974-75 when both programs competed in the NAIA. The Pirates won both meetings in Hampton, while Campbell claimed both games at Carter Gym.
- Hampton was a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference from 1995-2018 and made six NCAA tournament appearances, most recently back-to-back trips to the "Big Dance" in 2015 and 2016. Hampton is one of seven 15 seeds to record a victory in the NCAA tournament. The Pirates knocked out 2nd-seeded Iowa State in the 2011 event.
- Hampton is one of two historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that is not affiliated with the Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) or Southwestern Athletic (SWAC) conference. Tennessee State in Nashville is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. MEAC member North Carolina A&T announced on Feb. 7 that it would join the Big South in 2021-22.
- Head Coach Edward "Buck" Joyner, Jr., comes from a basketball coaching family. His father, Edward Joyner, Sr., was head coach at St. Paul's College, while his uncle, Steve Joyner, is head coach and athletic director at Johnson C. Smith University.
- Founded in 1868, Hampton University is situated near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay in the Hampton Roads region. Notable alumni include Booker T. Washington (1875), who founded Tuskegee University, former Good Morning America weatherman Spencer Christian, and NBA standout Rick Mahorn ('80), who played for the Washington Bullets, Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets.

- CU has won the turnover margin in 14 of its first 21 games and matched TOs 4 times.
- Campbell leads the Big South in assist-turnover ratio (1.1) and rates 2nd in turnover margin (+2.6).
- The Camels committed a season-low 6 turnovers in their Feb. 11 win over USC Upstate. CU has single-digit TOs five times, including 4 such occasions in Big South play.
- The Camels made a season-high 67.1% of their shots vs. Florida National (12/10), one day after making 60.5% vs. New Orleans (12/9). CU hit 62% from the floor in an 84-83 loss Dec. 30 at league-leading Winthrop.
