Thompson leads Camels by Hampton 76-57

Sophomore scores career-high 21 points as CU extends win streak to 5

HAMPTON, VA. – Messiah Thompson scored a career-high 21 points and Campbell extended its win streak to five games Thursday night with a 76-57 victory over Hampton at the HU Convocation Center.
 
Playing in their first road game since Jan. 10, the Camels hit 13-of-27 threes (.481) on the night and matched their season low with turnovers, while finishing with a 40-27 edge on the boards.
 
Thompson hit 5-of-9 threes and dealt five assists for the Camels (13-9, 9-6 Big South), who led by as many 24.  Cedric Henderson, Jr. added 14 points, Joshua Lusane finished with nine points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Austin McCullough came off the bench to add nine points and five rebounds in 21 minutes.  CU's second-leading scorer, Jordan Whitfield, finished with just 7 points, but dished five assists with no turnovers in 34 minutes.
 
Marquis Godwin led Hampton (9-12, 8-8) with 17 points. Davion Warren, who entered the game as the nation's sixth-leading scorer (21.9) finished with just 11 points on 4-of-15 shooting.  Seven-footer Dajour Dickens added eight points, 12 rebounds and five blocks for the Pirates, who shot 44 percent on the night, but made just 7-of-22 threes (.318).
 
Campbell finished with a 23-6 edge in bench points, 13-5 in second-chance points and 13-6 in points off turnovers.  The Camels shot 45 percent overall, 52 percent (15-29) in the second period.
 
After the lead swapped hands five times in the first 10 minutes, Campbell closed the first half on an 11-2 run to take a 36-28 lead into intermission.  Campbell made 7 of its first 11 shots in the second period and built a 20-point edge with 13:18 remaining after Jesus Carralero was credited with a bucket on a goal-tending call.
 
Hampton never drew closer than 18 the rest of the way.
 
Thompson scored 14 first-half points, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and dealt 3 assists as the Camels took its 8-point lead at the break.  Campbell shot 40.6 percent from the floor, but made 7-of-15 (.467) triples and held Hampton without a field goal for the last 5:28 of the first period.
 
Thursday's victory was Campbell's first at the HU Convocation Center since the Pirates joined the Big South in 2018-19.
 
The Camels and Hampton complete their two-game series Friday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
