BUIES CREEK, NC – A three-hit, three-RBI day from
Spencer Packard paced the offense to support the solid pitching and lift the Camels to an 8-1 win over Dayton Friday afternoon.
Ryan Chasse picked up his second win of the year with a solid outing. The sophomore went 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.
Brendan Wright,
Chandler Williford and
Landry Moore followed him to close the game with three scoreless innings and allowed only one hit.
Campbell jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first thanks to bases-loaded single from Packard to drive in two, and a productive groundout from
Zach Williams to bring in another.
Dayton plated its only run of the day in the top of the third, an unearned run on a throwing error by
Waldy Arias. In the bottom of the frame, another productive groundout from Williams brought in one more and pushed the lead back to three.
The offense wasn't done, as Campbell added two in each of the next two innings to tack on some insurance. It wasn't glamorous offense, but an unearned run on a throwing error and a bases loaded walk to Packard pushed the lead to 5-1 in the fourth.
In the fifth, a defensive interference during a rundown between third and home plated Christian and an RBI double from Arias brought De La Cruz in and score the games final run at 8-1.
Campbell worked a season-high 10 walks during the game and struck out a season-low five times.
The Campbell defense backed up the pitchers in a big way throughout the day despite costing Chasse an unearned run. Wolf made a pair of barehanded plays charging on well-placed bunts for a pair of outs. De La Cruz made a few solid plays up the middle at short, and
Marcus Skundrich shot down a runner trying to advance on a wild pitch.
Campbell is back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. for game two of the series with Dayton. Freshman
Thomas Harrington is expected to take the mound for the Camels. That game will also be available on ESPN+.
