BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Eastern Kentucky's four-run first inning was just enough to pull out a victory over the Camels; 4-3 in the first of four games these teams will play this weekend.
The loss drops Campbell to 3-2 on the season while Eastern Kentucky improves to 5-2.
The Colonels started hot against starting pitcher Kayla Howald, with a lead-off single, followed by a two-run homerun delivered by freshman Jeanay Riley in only the second at-bat of the game to give the visitors a quick 2-0 lead.
Later in the inning, with two outs and two runners on base, the Colonels' Mollie Paulick doubled off the wall in left center scoring two more runs making it 4-0.
The Camels would respond with two runs of their own in the first frame, as the team leader in RBIs Bri Bryant would make it six on the season, driving in Claudia Ware with a double ripped down the right field line.
Bryant would go on to score the other run of the inning for the Camels as Kayla Fredendall singled up the middle to make it 4-2 after one.
After an offensive start, it became a defensive struggle with both teams being unable to scratch across any runs for the next six innings.
A defensive performance highlighted by Campbell center fielder Destini Englad who made an incredible diving catch in left center in the top of the fifth to keep the Colonels from extending their lead.
Campbell would make things interesting with a rally attempt in the bottom of the seventh, as freshman Delaney McDilda hit a one out double to right center before a two out double from Claudia Ware would bring McDilda in to score making it 4-3.
The rally would fall short though, as Bri Bryant's threatening fly ball to center field would come up just short and caught by the EKU center fielder near the warning track ending the game.
Samantha Reynoso (2-0), picked up the win for the Colonels with six and two-thirds innings pitched, only giving up two earned runs off six hits and getting eight strikeouts.
Kayla Howald (1-2), took the loss despite the complete game effort, giving up two earned runs on six hits, striking out four.
