BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Davidson scored five of the game's final six goals, including three from Jane DiGregorio, to pull away from Campbell 17-7 Sunday afternoon at Barker-Lane Stadium.
The Wildcats (3-1) held a 12-4 halftime lead, led by four points from Julianne Carey on two goals and two assists. After Campbell (1-3) cut the Davidson lead to 7-4 on
Megan Matthews' goal with 9:46 on the clock, five different Wildcats posted goals, with two assisted by Carey to close the half.
CU trimmed the Davidson lead to 12-6 out of the break with goals from
Sam Bischoff and Matthews with 21:59 to play, but the Wildcats held Campbell to a single goal through the end of regulation.
Davidson converted 5-of-7 free position shots, while Campbell connected on 1-of-7 attempts.
Carey posted a game-high five points on two goals and three assists for the Wildcats, while DiGregorio and Sam Rippley added three goals apiece. Nine Wildcats registered multiple points in the win. Emma Johnson, who tallied two goals off the bench, caused three turnovers, while Amanda Monahan picked up 11 saves and seven ground balls.
Matthews led Campbell with four points on two goals and two assists, with Bischoff netting three goals.
Chandler Stewart and
Rebekah Taylor both picked up four ground balls for the Camels, with Stewart causing a pair of turnovers, while
Alex Salim made nine saves.
The Camels begin Big South play at home on March 13, hosting Radford in the first of two meetings with the Highlanders. CU will also travel to RU on April 14 for a nonconference meeting.
