Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Campbell falls to High Point 2-0

BUIES CREEK - High Point netted a goal in each half and defeated Campbell 2-0 Sunday evening at the Eakes Athletics Complex.

Lauren Mazich scored the first goal for the Panthers on a header in the 34th minute following a failed clearance in the box. Salome Prat added the second goal in the 46th minute on an assist from Chloe Le Franc.

Campbell (1-2) saw its 8-match home unbeaten streak come to an end against High Point (3-0), the Big South Conference preseason favorites.

"Tonight was a disappointing loss for all of us," head coach Samar Azem said following the match.

"I thought we dictated the momentum in the first 30 minutes of the match and we were unlucky not to get a goal.  But we also did not create enough chances to deserve a goal this evening and we gave up two goals that came off preventable breakdowns. These are all areas we can improve on and I know the players and our staff are hungry for that."

Elyssa Nowowieski provided two of the best chances for Campbell goals in the match as her shot from outside the box in the 19th minute hit the post followed later by a shot in the 85th minute that ricocheted off the crossbar.

Jessica Donald recorded a shot on frame in the 66th minute after receiving the ball following a Campbell free kick, but High Point keeper Morgan Hairston reacted quickly enough to make the save. Emma Bushee also had another shot on goal from well outside the box for the Camels in the 86th minute.

High Point narrowly held a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Stephanie Martelli recorded two saves for the Camels after making her collegiate debut to start the second half while Hairston had two for the Panthers.

"Despite the loss, we did a lot of things really well, it was definitely one of the most intense matches in the Big South I have been a part of," Azem continued. "The outcome may have been extremely unfavorable but I am undoubtedly excited about our direction."

Campbell heads back out on the road next Sunday for a match at Radford for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
