BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Sebastian Chalbaud scored the only goal of the match in the 26th minute and High Point ended Campbell's home unbeaten streak at 17 Saturday night at the Eakes Complex.
Holden Trent made four saves for the Panthers (5-1, 3-0) – including three acrobatic stops in the opening period – two earn his third shutout of the season.
Two-time Big South Conference champion Campbell (3-2-1, 2-1-1) suffered its first loss at the Eakes Complex since October 2018 after going 15-0-2 in its last 17 matches on home soil. The result also marked Campbell's first loss against a Big South opponent in 17 contests (14-1-2), dating to a 1-0 setback against Winthrop on Oct. 13, 2018.
Campbell, which defeated the Panthers 4-1 in the 2019 Big South final at the Eakes Complex, finished with an 8-6 edge in shots, 4-2 in attempts on target, and took eight corner kicks to three for the visitors.
Twice in the opening period, Trent denied dangerous shots off the foot of
Jalen James, and once left his feet to deflect
Franck Momo's effort.
Chalbaud finished a counter attack at the 25:14 mark on his right-footed effort from Alex Abril's assist.
In the 52nd minute,
Alex Egeonu broke free down the left flank and slid the ball across the area to James, but his off-balance attempt sailed over the cross bar.
Campbell had one last chance in the final minute, but
Moses Mensah's left-football blast at the edge of the box sailed off target.
The Camels return to action next Saturday (Mar. 20) in a 6 p.m. kickoff vs. Presbyterian.
