Game Recap: Softball |

Day one in Charlotte see Camels split two games

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Camels leaned heavily on senior Megan Richards to secure a 3-2 win over ACC opponent Syracuse, before falling 3-1 to host Charlotte on the first day of the Green & White Classic.

After today's results, Campbell moves to 6-8 on the season, with Syracuse and Charlotte moving to 6-5 and 13-7 respectively.

Game 1 - Campbell 3, Syracuse 2
Senior pitcher Megan Richards (2-1) got her second win of the season, throwing a complete seven innings, only giving up one earned run off six hits and striking out five Orange batters.

Richard's and the Camel defense behind her would frustrate the Syracuse offense that would threaten for most of the games, but come up short leaving nine runners on base across the game.

The Camel's offense would open the scoring in the third inning as Claudia Ware would take a first-pitch, deep to right-center for a two-RBI home run.

Syracuse would level the game 2-2 in the next inning, and continue to threaten with bases still loaded before Richards forced a two-out pop out to shortstop ending the threat and damage at two.

Campbell would break the stalemate in the fifth as Bri Bryant singled to left field which saw an error committed by the 'Cuse defender allowing Zaria Dunlap to score the would-be winning run from second base, giving the Camels a 3-2 lead.

Syracuse reliever Alexa Romero (2-3), took the loss with two innings pitched, giving up the one run off one hit.

Game 2 - Charlotte 3, Campbell 1
Freshman Sterling Hairston's second-inning RBI sacrifice fly would open the game's scoring and give the Camels a 1-0 lead that they would hold on to for most of the game.

Charlotte's offense would strike for all three of its runs in the fifth inning capitalizing on defensive errors by Campbell. The 49ers would score two on an error by Campbell's Hairston at second base taking a 2-1 lead. The lead would stretch to three with the next batter who would single up the middle to score the final run of the game.

In the top of the sixth, the Camels would threaten by getting runners on the corner before a Diana Parker groundout would end the inning.

Charlotte's Madelyn Wright (3-2) would get the win, pitching three and two-thirds innings giving up four hits and no runs, striking out four Camels.

Campbell's Georgeanna Barefoot (2-3), got the loss after six innings of work giving up three runs (one earned) off nine hits.
