CONWAY, S.C. –
Megan Matthews' goal at the final horn lifted Campbell to an 8-7 road win over Coastal Carolina Wednesday afternoon at Brooks Stadium.
After CU's
Alex Salim saved a Megan Bozzi free position attempt with 1:05 on the clock in a tie game, 7-7, the Camels sprinted down the field for one final possession.
Sam Bischoff's initial shot went wide, but Matthews took the inbound pass with five seconds remaining, driving from behind the left side of the cage and scoring through contact for the game-winner, 8-7.
Campbell moves to 3-4 on the year with the win, while Coastal Carolina falls to 6-3 overall.
Down 5-3 at the half, the Chanticleers tied the game with back to back goals from Kayla Downey. The Camels were shut out in the second half until the 7:00 mark, when
Lizzie Yurchak found a cutting
Julianna Sanchez for the go-ahead goal, but Coastal quickly answered with a pair of scores, first from Abbey Buchannan and another from Downey to give CCU the 7-6 lead with 3:42 to play.
At the 1:57 mark,
Ally Heath knotted the score at 7-7 with a helper from Matthews, who picked up the game-winner following the stop from Salim.
The Camels tallied eight shots with 12 turnovers in the second frame, but scored three times, after posting 17 first half attempts.
Campbell led by as much as 5-2 in the first half, scoring three times in 3:56, starting with Bischoff's second of the stanza, assisted by
Lizzie Yurchak, and ending with Matthews' scoop shot at 1:30.
The game's 15 combined goals marked the fewest for a CU outing since the Camels topped Coastal by the same score, 8-7, in 2016.
Matthews and Bischoff both ended the day with three points, with Matthews registering two goals and an assist, while Bischoff collected her fourth straight hat trick and fifth on the season with three goals. Yurchak added a pair of assists with five draw controls and
Kennedy Boyle picked up three ground balls.
Chandler Stewart and Sanchez both caused two turnovers with two ground balls for the Camels, with Sanchez adding a goal. Salim saved seven shots, tacking on a ground ball.
Downey paced Coastal with three goals, while Bozzi and Megan Busch posted a goal and an assist apiece. Anya McSorley registered a game-high five ground balls with three caused turnovers, and Claire Martell saved eight shots with two caused turnovers and a ground ball.
Campbell returns home on Saturday, March 27, hosting Furman at noon. The Camels will get back to Big South play on April 3 at Winthrop.
