Matthews, Salim named Big South players of the week

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After picking up a thrilling road win, Campbell's Megan Matthews and Alex Salim have both earned Big South player of the week honors.

Matthews took home offensive player of the week accolades, while Salim earned the defensive nod.

Matthews totaled six points on the week, including the game-winning goal at Coastal Carolina, tacking on two ground balls and a caused turnover. In a 7-7 tie game with five seconds on the clock, Matthews took the inbound pass, driving from behind the left side of the cage and scoring through contact for the game-winner, 8-7, at Coastal. The redshirt freshman totaled two goals and an assist against the Chanticleers, adding three goals for her first hat trick of the season against Furman.

Salim, meanwhile, tallied 21 saves with a .488 save percentage in two games last week. Her biggest save of the week came with 1:05 on the clock in a 7-7 game at Coastal, stopping a Megan Bozzi free position attempt, setting up Matthews' game-winner at the horn. Salim registered 11 saves with a ground ball on the afternoon. The redshirt junior then posted 10 saves with a ground ball against Furman. Salim has posted double figure saves in each of the last three games.

So far this season, seven different Camels have received Big South weekly honors.

The Camels will get back to Big South play on April 3 at Winthrop. CU returns home on April 7, hosting preseason Big South favorite High Point.
