Camels defeat Winthrop in Big South quarters

Winthrop held to 2-of-21 shooting in second half as Camels win 54-41

BUIES CREEK - Campbell held Winthrop to only two field goals the entire second half en route to a 54-41 win in the Hercules Tires Big South Championship quarterfinal round Monday night at Gore Arena.

Campbell improves to 15-6 on the year and advances to the semifinals of the Big South Championships while Winthrop closes out its season 6-18.

Winthrop led 32-26 with 6:27 left in the third quarter, but a 12-0 run featuring two three-pointers from Shy Tuelle gave CU a 38-34 lead heading into the fourth.

The Eagles made it a five-point game on a J'Mani Ingram jumper with 7:42 left to go, but Campbell answered back scoring seven straight points to push its lead to double-digits for the first time all evening.

Campbell's defense held Winthrop without a field goal the remainder of the quarter as Lauren McNamara-Clement closed out the game scoring the final four points of the night.

Winthrop's 2-of-21 shooting in the second half set a new Big South Championship record for fewest field goals made in a half and lowest field goal percentage at 9.5%.

Tuelle led a quartet of Camels who finished the night in double figures with 15 points. Brittany Staves added 12 points off the bench while Luana Serranho had 11 and McNamara-Clement chipped in 10.

McNamara-Clement also had two blocks moving her into a tie with former Campbell standout Felicia Autry (1994-98) for the third-most blocks in program history at 94.

The Camels turned 11 Winthrop turnovers into 13 points, all of which came in the second half.

Winthrop made 2-of-21 shots from the floor in the second half and shot 1-of-12 from three for the game.

J'Mani Ingram led the Eagles with 12 points and totaled six rebounds while Sydney Hunter added four points, two blocks and a game-high nine boards.

Campbell advances and hosts third-seeded Longwood in the semifinal round of the Big South Championship, Thursday at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
