BUIES CREEK, NC – Lawson Harrill's pinch-hit RBI triple in the eighth proved to be the difference in Campbell's 3-2 win over the College of Charleston (3-8) Tuesday night. Campbell (7-4) used three big hits to plate all three runs on the night, scoring via a home run and two triples.
Campbell jumped out to an early lead thanks to a
Connor Denning solo-shot in the bottom of the first. His fourth long ball of the year tied him for both the team and conference best.
Inheriting a bases-loaded one-out jam in the third,
Logan Heintzman needed just two pitches to escape the inning by inducing a 6-4-3 double-play to end the frame and limit the Cougars to just one run in the inning.
Knotted at 1-1,
Zach Neto took one to deep center and off the wall for an RBI triple of his own in the fifth to give the Camels a 2-1 lead.
After helping the Camels take the lead on offense, Neto was called to the hill. He did give the run back, but limited the damage and ultimately worked 2.0 innings allowing just one run on one hit.
Now tied at 2-2,
Grant Harris singled to center to get aboard in the eighth. Harrill pinch-hit in the nine-hole in the order with two outs. The redshirt freshman took a 2-0 pitch the other way and landed it just inside the right field line. Harrill, an outfielder with plenty of speed, slid into third without a throw and had Campbell up 3-2.
Kevin Westlake, who looks to be assuming the closing role this season, worked the ninth. Facing the 2-3-4 spots in the Charleston order, the senior worked a three-up-three-down inning to shut the door on the Camels 3-2 win.
Neto earned his first win of the year on the mound and Westlake picked up his second save.
Spencer Packard, the Big South leader in OBP reached three times on the evening with a double, single and walk. Neto and
Collin Wolf also had multi-hit games.
Campbell returns to action Friday to host USC Upstate. Upstate will enter the weekend with a 10-0 record and coming off a 12-2 win over Clemson. Friday's game will begin at 5 p.m. and is available on ESPN+.
