Camels take two against Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. - Campbell dominated in the series-opening doubleheader today against Longwood, winning both games on the day with final scores of 3-0 and 9-0 (5 innings)

The two wins move Campbell to an 11-10 record on the season and 4-1 in the Big South with Longwood dropping to 15-15 and 6-2 in conference play.

Game 1 - Campbell 3, Longwood 0
Senior pitcher Megan Richards was the star in the Camels' 3-0 victory over the Lancers in the first game of the doubleheader. Richards threw a complete game shutout to go to 4-2 on the season only giving up six hits and striking out four, in the win.

Campbell would jump out to an early lead, thanks to Kayla Fredendall's first inning blast over the wall in right-center putting the Camels up 2-0.

The Lancers would be ineffective at the plate for most of the game, having to wait till the bottom of the fourth to record their first hit of the game.

In the sixth, Claudia Ware would push the Campbell lead to 3-0, after her sacrifice fly to left-center would be enough to bring in Bri Bryant from third.

Richards' shutout was threatened in the sixth and seventh inning, as the Lancers would get runners on second and third base in both innings before the Camels were able to work out of the jams to secure the win.

Longwood's Sydney Backstrom (11-7) took the loss, throwing a complete seven innings giving up three runs on five hits, with six strikeouts.

Game 2 - Campbell 9, Longwood 0
The Campbell bats were burning hot in the second game of the day's doubleheader bringing the run-rule into effect and winning the game 9-0 in five innings.

After working the bases full and walking in a run, Longwood starter Angelina Sherba would surrender a grand slam to Diana Parker putting the Camels up by five.

Later in the inning, Morgan Rios would provide her contribution to the route with an RBI triple down the right-field line to score Delaney McDilda for the Camels' last run of the inning, making the score 6-0.

Diana Parker would get her fifth RBI of the game in the second inning with a sacrifice fly taking the lead to seven.

Clever base running from the Camels saw Destini England able to steal home getting the necessary eighth run to meet the run-rule requirement before England would be walked home in the fifth inning for the final run of the game.
Georgeanna Barefoot (5-4) was dominant in the circle for the Camels going a complete five innings only giving up two hits and striking out five Longwood batters on her way to the win.
