FARMVILLE, Va. - The long ball was the order of the day as the Camels finished the sweep of the Longwood Lancers with a 6-1 victory fueled by three home runs.
With the win, the Camels improve to 12-10 on the season and 5-1 in Big South play with Longwood dropping to 15-16 on the season and 6-3 in conference play.Â
Claudia Ware got the scoring going in the third inning for the Camels with a solo home run, taking a 2-2 fastball over the right-field wall.
Delaney McDilda would push the lead to three in the fourth inning with a two-RBI home run of her own.Â
A fielding error would allow
Claire Blount to score in the fifth inning making it 4-0 before Longwood would get one run back in the sixth inning off a fielding error.Â
Longwood's sixth inning rally would end however with the bases loaded, as a threatening fly ball would fall just short into the glove of
Bri Bryant.
The final two runs of the game came from
Kayla Fredendall's second home run of the weekend.
Kayla Howald (S,1), would come in and finish the game off in the circle and get the save with two innings of work, with no hits or runs allowed.
Georgeanna Barefoot (6-4), earned her second win of the weekend with five innings pitched, allowing one unearned run off four hits and one strikeout.
Longwood's Sydney Backstrom (11-8), took the loss with seven innings pitched allowing six earned runs off seven hits while striking out seven batters.
With the win, the Camels became the first team in program history since 1993 to sweep the Lancers.
On deck
Campbell will head to Boiling Springs, N.C. on April 6-7 to face the Runnin Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb for a three-game midweek series.
