Buies Creek, N.C. – Campbell picked up its first sweep of the season with a 15-6 win over Winthrop Saturday afternoon. Campbell scored in each of the first three innings to grab the lead and blew it open with a seven-run seventh to secure the win.
The sweep was the first for the Camels over Winthrop since taking all three games in Rock Hill on March 23-24, 2012.
Following the sweep, Campbell improves to 13-8 and 8-5 in the Big South. Winthrop falls to 8-10 and 5-5 in the league.
Both pitching staffs struggled with command throughout the game and issued a combined 21 walks, nine by the Eagles and 12 by the Camels. But Campbell added plenty of its own offense, tallying a season-high 17 hits on the afternoon.
Winthrop's walks hurt them early, walking the first two Camels in the first inning who would each come around to score.
Bryce Arnold picked up an RBI in the second and
Zach Williams and
Ty Babin added RBIs in the third to push the lead to 6-2 through three innings.
Logan Heintzman relieved Kuehler in the third and worked 3.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
After Winthrop made it close in the seventh with a pair of runs off
Jonathan Beymer to cut it to 6-4, the offense quickly ballooned the lead. The Camels scored seven runs all with two outs to push the lead to 13-4. The runs were scored on three RBI singles, an RBI double from
Matthew Christian and a two-run triple from
Grant Harris.
CJ Peechatka added two more in the seventh on a two-run double. The redshirt-junior now has two hits on the year, both RBI doubles to left-center.
Winthrop got two in the ninth, but
Brendan Wright struck out three batters in the frame to shut the door on the 15-6 win.
Ten different Camels recorded an RBI on the day, and four had multiple RBIs.
Ty Babin led the way with three hits and three RBIs on the day, marking the second three-hit game of his career and first since 2018.
Campbell and Winthrop meet again this Tuesday in Rock Hill, S.C. for a makeup game that was originally scheduled for March 16.
