BUIES CREEK - Thanks to Elyssa Nowowieski's golden goal in the 105th minute, the Campbell women's soccer team defeated Winthrop on Saturday evening in its final home match of the regular season at Eakes Athletics Complex.
Campbell, unbeaten in its last five, improve to 5-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in Big South play while the Eagles fall to 2-5-1.
"I'm very happy for our seniors to get a win in their last regular season home game and very proud of the team for the win," head coach Samar Azem said following the match.
The Camels found the back of the net in the second extra time period as Cazzi Norgren's corner found Emily Kaestner in the box. Kaestner headed it down to Nowowieski, firing a shot past the Winthrop keeper for the golden goal victory.
Campbell's offense was aggressive from the beginning of the match, firing off 27 shots with seven on target in regulation against a resilient Winthrop defense.
Laney Peabody provided one of the best chances of the night for the Camels in the 25th minute as her header from a corner hit the Winthrop post. Ashleigh Harris provided another great look in the 39th minute as her bicycle kick went wide.
The Eagles put two shots on goal throughout the match as their best scoring opportunities came in the 64th and 66th minutes on a header and shot from Megan Loveland.
Campbell ended the match out-shooting Winthrop 32-3, putting nine shots on goal. The Camels also earned 17 corners to the Eagles three.
"Tonight's match was a battle, we went away from some things we've done well but got our momentum back and took control of the latter part of the second half and overtime periods," Azem later said. "That's big and that's a huge growing step for a young team."
Stephanie Martelli picked up a second-straight shutout as Camels backline limited Winthrop to two shots on goal.
"We did fantastic to get the shutout as Steph came up with a big save to secure the shutout. I'm very happy and proud of her and her growth."
Campbell honored its senior class consisting of Emily Kaestner, Zona Kinnaman, Hanna Maansson and Siara Southerland. Director of Soccer Management and graduate assistant Shelby Denkert was also honored.
