Game Recap: Baseball |

Camels sweep UNC Asheville

Buies Creek, N.C. – Campbell dominated the doubleheader to pick up a pair of wins and the series sweep over UNC Asheville. The Camels took the opening game of the series 12-2 in seven innings ahead of a 9-1 win to complete the sweep.

With the wins, Campbell improves to 23-13, 18-9 in the Big South while Asheville drops to 13-24, 12-17 in the league. Campbell is now 14-4 in doubleheaders this season.

Both Campbell starters, Ryan Chasse and Thomas Harrington, turned in quality starts on the day. Chasse was also credited with a complete game as the game was called after seven innings.

Including last night's 19-1 victory, Campbell outscored UNC Asheville 40-4 during the weekend.

Game 1 Recap
Already up 1-0 after one inning, Campbell quickly broke the game open with a seven-run second inning. The Camels sent 13 batters to the plate in the frame and recorded six hits. The big hit in the inning came from Matthew Christian, a three-run shot to left field to cap the scoring in the inning.

Campbell added two more in the fourth on a hit-and-run RBI by Waldy Arias and an RBI double from Bryce Arnold.

One run away from the 10-run rule threshold in the seventh, Christian wasted no time ending the ballgame with a leadoff solo home run to push the score to 12-2. That gave Christian his third multi-home run game of the season.

Ryan Chasse tossed a complete game for the Camels, the first complete game of the season. It also matched his longest outing of the season. He finished with a line of 7.0 IP, 5 R, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 Ks. Asheville's Jacob Edwards was tagged with the loss.

Six Camels had multiple hits in the game including each of the top four batters in the order.

Game 2 Recap
Campbell picked up right where it left off with Denning hitting a two-run blast in the bottom of the first to put the Camels up 2-0.

Four more runs scored in the fourth including back-to-back doubles from Arnold and Denning to put Campbell up 6-0.

Neto extended his hit streak to 18 games with a two-run single in the sixth and a Grant Harris sac fly in the seventh capped the Campbell scoring at 9-1.

Just the 2-0 lead proved to be enough run support for Thomas Harrington who was dominant on the hill. The freshman went a season-high 7.0 innings and struck out a season-high 11 Bulldogs. After allowing a hit in the first, he worked three-up, three-down frames in each of the second through sixth innings without another hit. He did allow a solo home run in the seventh, but that was the only blemish on his line. He finished 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 K.

Harrington picked up the win to improve to 3-2 this season while Asheville's Kole Harris was tagged with his first loss, now 2-1. Logan Heintzman and Cade Boxrucker each worked a scoreless inning to close out the series.

NOTABLES
Zach Neto extended his hit streak to 18 games. That gives him the longest hit streak by a Camel since Mike Priest reached 20 games during the 2006 season.

Neto's RBI streak came to a close in the first game at 15 games with at least one RBI. He got back on track in game two with three RBI thanks to a sac fly and two-run single.

Matthew Christian now has three multi-home run games this season. That is the most such games by a Camel since Cole Hallum in 2017.

Campbell pitching allowed only four total runs during the series. That is the fewest allowed in a three-game series since allowing four at Longwood on March 21-23, 2014.

UP NEXT
Campbell is set for four straight road games beginning Tuesday with a trip to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina. That game will be available on the ACC Network. The Camels then head to Radford for a three-game series next weekend.
