Buies Creek, N.C. – Campbell picked up its seventh straight Big South win with a 12-3 victory over Winthrop Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium. The Camels are now 5-0 this season against the Eagles and have scored a total of 69 runs across those five games.
Six Campbell pitchers combined to allow just three runs on nine scattered hits on the evening. That gave the offense time to operate, as the Camels scored at least one run in six different innings. Campbell didn't use the long ball tonight, going without a home run for the first time in 11 games, but still reached double digits in the runs column for the 14
th time in Big South play.
Both offenses got on the board early, exchanging sac flies in the first and second innings. Winthrop added one more in the fourth to take the lead, but it didn't last long.
Trailing 2-1, Campbell quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, one on a stolen base and errant throw followed by an RBI single from
Bryce Arnold. The fourth inning was the first of five consecutive innings that the Camels scored a run.
Campbell broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning.
Mason De La Cruz dropped down a suicide squeeze bunt to start the rally, and Packard delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-run single back up the middle. The inning gave Campbell breathing room for the first time all game at 8-3.
Marcus Skundrich put the game away in the eighth with a pinch-hit bases-clearing triple to right field. That was his first career triple and pushed the score to the eventual final of 12-3.
Aaron Rund got the midweek start and tossed 4.1 innings for the second week in a row. He finished with a solid like of 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 Ks. He was followed by five seniors out of the bullpen.
Jack Yusko earned the win after taking over for Rund and tossing an inning of relief.
Campbell scattered 11 hits on the night, led by a 3-3, three RBI night from
Spencer Packard. Eight different Camels recorded a hit on the evening.
The Fighting Camels return to action this weekend with a key Big South Series at USC Upstate. Upstate currently holds the top spot in the Big South Standings with Campbell a spot behind in second. Friday is slated for a 5 o'clock first pitch ahead of the 1 p.m. start to Saturday's doubleheader. All three games will be available on ESPN+.
