Camels drop Big South Championship opener

Fayetteville, N.C. – Presbyterian starter Charlie McDaniel kept the Campbell offense hitless for 5.2 innings as Presbyterian took the opening game of the Ingles Big South Baseball Championship 7-2 at Segra Stadium. Zacchaeus Rasberry had a huge day at the plate for the Blue Hose, finishing a single shy of the cycle with three RBI and reached four times.

With the loss, Cambpell falls to 33-15 on the year, and moves to the loser's bracket of the Big South Championship. The Fighting Camels will face the loser of USC Upstate and Gardner-Webb Friday at 11 a.m.

Rasberry put PC on the board early with a solo shot in the second. He supplied their second run the following inning with an RBI double. With the score still 2-0, he tripled off the center field wall to push the lead to 3-0 before coming around to score himself making it a 4-0 ballgame.

The Camels finally notched their first hit on a two-out single to left from Bryce Arnold in the sixth, but couldn't muster anything else.

Campbell finally broke through in the seventh on a Zach Neto double followed by a Matthew Christian single to cut into the lead. But with runners on the corners and one out, PC reliever Eric Toth picked up two big outs to hold on to the three-run lead.

Toth, a two-way player, added some insurance for himself with a three-run blast in the top of the ninth to push the lead to 7-1.

Cade Kuehler was tagged with the loss after tossing 5.0+ innings and allowing eight hits and four runs. Ty Cummings escaped a bases-loaded no-out jam in the seventh, the keep Campbell close at the time, but later allowed the three-run blast to Toth.

The Camels put a little pressure on in the ninth with the bases loaded and one out, but a Grant Harris sac fly scored the only run before the 7-2 final.

Campbell returns to Segra Stadium tomorrow for an 11 a.m. first pitch. If the Camels win, they'll play again at 7 p.m. Each game will be streamed on ESPN+ tomorrow.
