Camels stay alive, win 16-13 slugfest over Samford

Starkville, Miss. - The Fighting Camels won a slugfest to keep their season alive in a 16-13 win over Samford Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. The teams combined to amass 30 hits and seven home runs in a four-hour ballgame that stretched over five hours thanks to an hour long rain delay.

The win advances the Camels (36-17) to Sunday in where they will meet the loser of VCU and Mississippi State, taking place later this evening.

After being stifled by VCU yesterday, Campbell's bats came ready and exploded for the most hits and runs in the program's NCAA tournament history. It started with a five-run first, and continued as Campbell scored multiple runs in each of its first five innings.

During those innings, Grant Harris (3), Bryce Arnold (6), Zach Neto (11), and Spencer Packard (10) all went deep. Neto and Packard went back-to-back in the fifth inning.

Just as Packard was touching home following his blast, the skies opened up and the game went into a 1:10 weather delay with the Camels up 14-7.

The delay benefited the Bulldogs, as they came out swinging and cut the lead to 14-11 with a run in the sixth and a three-spot in the seventh. Sonny DiChiara was their big performer of the night, going deep twice during a 3-5 night.

Campbell added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend the lead back to five with three outs to go.

The last three outs always prove the hardest, and after two runs scored cut it to 16-13, Samford had the bases loaded with nobody out threatening to tie or take the lead. Campbell turned to senior Kevin Westlake, the team's saves leader on the year. Westlake needed just seven pitches to slam the door, getting a strikeout and inducing a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Eight Camels finished with an RBI, with six of those players having multiple RBI. Grant Harris had the biggest day at the plate, going 3-3 with 3 RBI, 3 runs scored and reached safely five times. Bryce Arnold also had three RBI, while Matthew Christian scored a team-high four runs.

Ryan Chasse got the start on the mound and tossed 4.1 IP and allowed seven runs while striking out four. Logan Heintzman ate up innings in the middle of the game, tossing 3.0 and allowing five runs, but found himself in line for the win (7-1). Kevin Westlake picked up his fourth save of the year.

Campbell is back tomorrow in another elimination game at 3 ET, 2 CT against either MSU or VCU, who's game began around 8:20 CT.
